Abstract

To manage physical paths between a server system and a storage system and information about routing between virtual machines and virtual storage systems in an integrated fashion. A computer system of the present invention includes: a computer and a storage system that stores data, in which the computer includes first information for managing the first resource relating to the computer; and the storage system includes second information for managing the second resource provided in the storage system, and in which a relation between the virtual machine and the virtual storage system is defined based on the first information and the second information.

Claims (29)

1. A computer system comprising:

a server computer comprising a first CPU and a plurality of I/O adaptors;

a storage system coupled to the server computer, the storage system having a second CPU, a plurality of disk drives, and a plurality of channel adaptors to receive data input/output requests from the server computer; and

a control terminal coupled to the server computer and the storage system,

wherein the first CPU of the server computer processes a first hypervisor operating a plurality of virtual machines, each of the plurality of virtual machines having a virtual I/O adaptor corresponding to one of the plurality of I/O adaptors,

wherein the second CPU of the storage system processes a second hypervisor operating a plurality of virtual storages, each of the plurality of virtual storages having a virtual disk which is partitioned from the plurality of disk drives, and a virtual channel adaptor corresponding to one of the plurality of channel adaptors,

wherein the control terminal collects server computer control information on a correspondence between a virtual I/O adaptor of one of the plurality of virtual machines and one of the plurality of I/O adaptors, and storage system control information on a correspondence between a virtual channel adaptor and one of the plurality of channel adaptors,

wherein the control terminal stores control information on a relation between one of the plurality of the virtual storages and one of the plurality of the virtual machines, and

wherein the control terminal displays a particular virtual path established between a certain virtual I/O adaptor and a certain virtual channel adaptor with corresponding physical paths established between one of the plurality of I/O adaptors and one of the plurality of channel adaptors, according to the server computer control information and the storage system control information and the control table.

2. A computer system according to claim 1 , wherein the first hypervisor is a program executed by the first CPU.

3. A computer system according to claim 2 , wherein the program of the first hypervisor is loaded by the BIOS.

4. A computer system according to claim 1 , wherein the first hypervisor is implemented both in software and in hardware.

5. A computer system according to claim 1 ,

wherein one of the plurality of virtual machines further has another virtual I/O adaptor configured to correspond with another one of the plurality of I/O adaptor, and

wherein one of the plurality of virtual storages further has another virtual channel adaptor configured to correspond with another one of the plurality of channel adaptors.

6. A computer system according to claim 5 , wherein the control terminal further displays a correspondence between another virtual path established between another virtual I/O adaptor and another virtual channel adaptor and another physical path established between another one of the plurality of the I/O adaptors and another one of the plurality of channel adaptors.

7. A method for operating a computer system comprising a server computer comprising a first CPU and a plurality of I/O adaptors; a storage system coupled to the server computer, the storage system having a second CPU, a plurality of disk drives, and a plurality of channel adaptors to receive data input/output requests from the server computer; and a control terminal coupled to the server computer and the storage system, the method comprising:

controlling the first CPU to operate a first hypervisor, wherein the first hypervisor controls a plurality of virtual machines, each of the plurality of virtual machines having a virtual I/O adaptor corresponding to one of the plurality of I/O adaptors;

controlling the second CPU to operate a second hypervisor, wherein the second hypervisor controls a plurality of virtual storages, each of the plurality of virtual storages having a virtual disk which is partitioned from the plurality of disk drives, and a virtual channel adaptor corresponding to one of the plurality of channel adaptors;

at the control terminal server collecting computer control information on a correspondence between a virtual I/O adaptor of one of the plurality of virtual machines and one of the plurality of I/O adaptors, and storage system control information on a correspondence between a virtual channel adaptor and one of the plurality of channel adaptors;

at the control terminal storing control information on a relation between one of the plurality of the virtual storages and one of the plurality of the virtual machines; and

at the control terminal displaying a particular virtual path established between a certain virtual I/O adaptor and a certain virtual channel adaptor with corresponding physical paths established between one of the plurality of I/O adaptors and one of the plurality of channel adaptors, according to the server computer control information and the storage system control information and the control table.

8. A method according to claim 7 , wherein the first hypervisor is a program executed by the first CPU.

9. A method according to claim 8 , wherein the program of the first hypervisor is loaded by the BIOS.

10. A method according to claim 7 , wherein the first CPU is controlled by software and hardware in order to operate the first hypervisor.

11. A method according to claim 7 ,

wherein one of the plurality of virtual machines further has another virtual I/O adaptor configured to correspond with another one of the plurality of I/O adaptor, and

wherein one of the plurality of virtual storages further has another virtual channel adaptor configured to correspond with another one of the plurality of channel adaptors.

12. A method according to claim 11 , further comprising at the control terminal displaying a correspondence between another virtual path established between another virtual I/O adaptor and another virtual channel adaptor and another physical path established between another one of the plurality of the I/O adaptors and another one of the plurality of channel adaptors.
