Abstract

A system and method for actively damping tension members modulates the natural frequency of shape memory alloys incorporated into tension members, such as suspension ropes or cables. The frequency of the tension member can be modulated by heating the shape memory alloy, such modulation preventing potentially destructive resonance with natural exciting forces.

Claims (27)

1. An active damping system comprising:

(a) a tension member comprising a core, wherein at least a portion of the core comprises a shape memory alloy configured to exhibit a phase change, wherein the core is at least partially surrounded by aramid fibers;

(b) an inducer, wherein the inducer is configured to initiate the phase change in the shape memory alloy of the tension member; and

(c) a controller, wherein the controller is configured to control the inducer to modulate the phase change.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tension member includes strands of shape memory alloy.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the strands of shape memory alloy are retained within the core of the tension member.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the inducer is an inductive coupling.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the inductive coupling comprises an induction coil coiled in the form of a solenoid about the tension member, where the induction coil is coupled to an AC power source.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the inductive coupling is configured to initiate the phase change in the shape memory alloy by adjusting the temperature of the shape memory alloy, wherein the shape memory alloy is thermally responsive.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is a proportional integral derivative (PID) controller.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the PID controller is implemented in software in programmable logic controllers.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the PID controller incorporates fuzzy logic.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the inducer utilizes resistance heating to initiate the phase change.

11. A method for actively damping a tension member comprising the steps of:

using a tension member, wherein the tension member comprises a core, wherein at least a portion of the core comprises a shape memory alloy configured to exhibit a phase change, wherein the core is at least partially surrounded by aramid fibers;

using an inducer, wherein the inducer is configured to initiate a phase change in the shape memory alloy;

using a controller, wherein the controller is configured to control the inducer to modulate the phase change;

calculating the frequency of exciting forces;

calculating the natural frequency of the tension member;

initiating a phase change in the shape memory alloy with the inducer when the frequency of the exciting forces approaches the natural frequency of the tension member; and

modulating the phase change by controlling the inducer with the controller to prevent resonance.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the inducer is an inductive coupling.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the inductive coupling comprises an induction coil coiled in the form of a solenoid about the tension member, where the induction coil is coupled to an AC power source.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the inductive coupling is configured to initiate the phase change in the shape memory alloy by adjusting the temperature of the shape memory alloy, wherein the shape memory alloy is thermally responsive.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the controller is a proportional integral derivative (PID) controller.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the PID controller is implemented in software in programmable logic controllers.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the inducer utilizes resistance heating to initiate the phase change.
