Ink storage compartment with bypass fluid path structures
View Patent ↗The present invention relates to an ink storage compartment. The compartment includes a reservoir structure, in turn, defining a plurality of ink reservoirs from which respective ink outlets extend. Ink absorbent material is provided within respective ink reservoirs. Bypass fluid path structures extend between respective ink outlets and ink reservoirs so that, when filling the ink storage compartment by supplying ink to the ink outlets, ink can be supplied to the ink reservoirs through both the ink outlets and bypass fluid path structures.
1. An ink storage compartment comprising a plurality of ink reservoirs, each ink reservoir comprising:
an ink absorbent material;
an ink outlet;
a main fluid channel extending between said ink outlet and said ink absorbent material; and
a bypass fluid channel extending between said main fluid channel and said absorbent material, such that, when filling said ink reservoir by supplying ink to said ink outlet, ink is supplied through both said main fluid channel and said bypass fluid channel.
2. An ink storage compartment as claimed in claim 1 , each ink reservoir defines a vent in fluid communication with said absorbent material.
3. An ink storage compartment as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each main fluid channel comprises an ink filter structure located between the ink absorbent material and the outlet.
4. An ink storage compartment as claimed in claim 3 , wherein no ink filter structure is located in said bypass fluid channels.
5. An ink storage compartment as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each bypass fluid channel comprises a bypass control valve so that the bypass fluid channel can be closed to fluid flow.
6. An ink storage compartment as claimed in claim 5 , in which a controller is provided for either manually or automatically controlling the bypass control valves.
7. An ink storage compartment as claimed in claim 5 , in which each bypass control valve includes a movable wall portion of the bypass fluid channel.
8. An ink storage compartment as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the movable wall portion is defined by a weakened portion of the bypass fluid channel.
