Abstract

Displays systems and methods for dithering input image data to reduce quantization errors in a display system include inputting input image data to be rendered by said display system; applying a gamma table to the input image data to create a first intermediate image data; applying a dithering pattern, the dithering pattern comprising a checkerboard pattern, the checkerboard pattern depending upon the subpixel layout of the display. The display system may include a separate gamma table for each input color channel and apply the separate gamma table to perform white point adjustments for the display system.

Claims (16)

1. A method of processing input image data for displaying an image, the method implemented in a display system, said method comprising:

inputting input image data to be rendered by said display system;

applying a gamma table to said input image data to create a first intermediate image data; and

applying a dithering pattern, the dithering pattern comprising different dithering patterns depending upon different subpixel layouts of the display system, to said first intermediate data, said dithering pattern comprising a checkerboard pattern, said checkerboard pattern depending upon the subpixel layout of the display system, wherein applying said dithering pattern creates a second intermediate image data and wherein said second intermediate image data is processed with a subpixel rendering module so as to subpixel render the second intermediate image data.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said gamma table uses a greater bit depth than used in subsequent image data processing by said display system.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein said display system comprises a separate gamma table for each input color channel.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein said method further comprises: applying said separate gamma table to perform white point adjustments for said display system.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the checkerboard pattern comprises at least two different checkerboard patterns for at least two different color channels for said input image data.

6. A display system comprising:

a display;

an input gamma unit for applying gamma tables to input image data and for applying dithering patterns to said input image data to create intermediate image data; and

a subpixel rendering module for receiving the intermediate image data and for subpixel rendering the intermediate image data,

wherein the dithering patterns comprise checkerboard patterns depending upon different subpixel layouts of the display and comprise different dithering patterns depending upon the subpixel layout of the display.

7. The display system of claim 6 wherein said display system comprises a separate gamma table for each input color channel.

8. The display system of claim 7 wherein said display system applies said separate gamma table to perform white point adjustments.

9. The display system of claim 8 wherein said display system comprises at least two different checkerboard patterns for at least two different color channels for said input image data.
