Abstract

A microphone shield system captures sound in adverse conditions. The system includes a microphone positioned within a membrane. The membrane is inflated around the microphone to form an enclosure. The inflated membrane passes signals within a selected frequency range. The membrane may block or attenuate signals above and/or below the frequency range to pass a desired sound with little surrounding interference.

Claims (32)

1. A microphone shield system comprising:

a membrane inflated by an inflation pressure forming a microphone enclosure, where the inflated pressure exceeds an atmospheric pressure;

a seal coupled to the membrane; and

a microphone positioned within the microphone enclosure.

2. The microphone shield system of claim 1 , where the inflation pressure is greater than or equal to an expected air turbulence pressure.

3. The microphone shield system of claim 1 , where the membrane is configured to function as a bandpass filter.

4. The microphone shield system of claim 1 , where the inflation pressure is a tailored inflation pressure selected based on a desired frequency range to be passed by the membrane.

5. The microphone shield system of claim 1 , where the membrane is configured to function as a frequency bandpass filter that passes about 300 Hz to about 3,400 Hz.

6. The microphone shield system of claim 1 , further comprising a foam layer positioned above the membrane.

7. The microphone shield system of claim 6 , where the foal layer comprises an open cell foam.

8. A method for constructing a microphone shield system, the method comprising:

providing a microphone;

inflating a membrane to an inflation pressure to form a microphone enclosure that surrounds the microphone; and

sealing the microphone enclosure.

9. The method of claim 8 , where the inflation pressure exceeds an atmospheric pressure.

10. The method of claim 8 , where the inflation pressure exceeds an expected air turbulence pressure.

11. The method of claim 8 , where inflating the membrane comprises inflating the membrane to function as a bandpass filter.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising selecting the inflation pressure based on a desired frequency range to be passed by the membrane.

13. The method of claim 8 , where inflating the membrane comprises inflating the membrane to function as a bandpass filter that passes about 300 Hz to about 2,400 Hz.

14. The method of claim 8 , further comprising providing a foam layer that surrounds the membrane.

15. The method of claim 14 , where the foam layer comprises an open cell foam.

16. The method of claim 8 , where sealing the microphone enclosure comprises connecting a seal to the membrane.

17. A microphone shield system comprising:

a membrane inflated by an inflation pressure forming a microphone enclosure, where the inflated pressure exceeds an expected air turbulence pressure;

a seal coupled to the membrane; and

a microphone positioned within the microphone enclosure.

18. The microphone shield system of claim 17 , where the inflation pressure is greater than an atmospheric pressure.

19. The microphone shield system of claim 17 , where the membrane is configured to function as a bandpass filter.

20. The microphone shield system of claim 17 , where the inflation pressure is a tailored inflation pressure selected based on a desired frequency range to be passed by the membrane.

21. The microphone shield system of claim 17 , where the membrane is configured to function as a frequency bandpass filter that passes about 300 Hz to about 3,400 Hz.

22. The microphone shield system of claim 17 , further comprising a foam layer positioned above the membrane.

23. The microphone shield system of claim 17 , where the foam layer comprises an open cell foam.
