Abstract

A pipe-within-a-pipe and method of use are provided. The pipe-within-a-pipe comprises a first tube overlaying a second tube. The first tube and the second tube have different structures in some respect.

Claims (41)

1 . A pipe comprising:

an inner tube; and

an outer tube overlaying the inner tube.

2 . The pipe of claim 1 wherein the structure of the inner tube and the outer tube differ from one another.

3 . The pipe of claim 2 wherein the inner tube is manufactured from a first selected material and the outer tube is manufactured from a second selected material.

4 . The pipe of claim 3 wherein the second selected material is selected from the list consisting of a ferrous metal, steel, copper, aluminum, a steel ferrous alloy, a copper alloy, nickel, titanium, a bronze alloy, an aluminum-bronze alloy, and a nickel-bronze alloy, and the first selected material is selected from the list consisting of a ferrous metal, steel, copper, aluminum, a steel ferrous alloy, a copper alloy, nickel, titanium, a bronze alloy, an aluminum-bronze alloy, and a nickel-bronze alloy, wherein the first and second selected materials differ from one another in some respect.

5 . The pipe of claim 4 wherein the second selected material comprises aluminum bronze.

6 . The pipe of claim 3 wherein the second selected material comprises aluminum bronze and the first selected material comprises aluminum bronze of a grade that differs from the grade of the second selected material.

7 . The pipe of claim 3 wherein the second selected material comprises aluminum bronze and the first selected material comprises steel.

8 . The pipe of clam 3 wherein the second selected material comprises copper and the first selected material is selected from the list consisting of a ferrous metal, steel, copper, aluminum, a steel ferrous alloy, a copper alloy, nickel, titanium, a bronze alloy, an aluminum-bronze alloy, and a nickel-bronze alloy.

9 . The pipe of claim 3 wherein the inner tube is defined by a first inner boundary and a first outer boundary; and the outer tube is defined by a second inner boundary and a second outer boundary, the second inner boundary overlaying the first outer boundary.

10 . The pipe of claim 9 wherein the second outer boundary is formed to deter the collection of foreign material thereon.

11 . The pipe of claim 10 wherein the second outer boundary is generally arcuate.

12 . The pipe of claim 9 wherein the second outer boundary is formed to promote the collection of foreign material thereon.

13 . The pipe of claim 12 wherein the second outer boundary includes one or more elongate ridges.

14 . The pipe of claim 12 wherein the second outer boundary includes a generally planar portion having a notch therein.

15 . The pipe of claim 9 wherein the second outer boundary includes a generally planar portion.

16 . The pipe of claim 3 wherein the first selected material is selected to exploit a first characteristic and the second selected material is selected to exploit a second characteristic.

17 . The pipe of claim 3 wherein the first selected material is selected to optimize a first characteristic and the second selected material is selected to optimize a second characteristic.

18 . The pipe of claim 1 wherein the pipe comprises a half pipe.

19 . The pipe of claim 1 wherein the pipe comprises a unitary pipe.

20 . The pipe of claim 1 wherein the pipe comprises a heavy walled pipe.

21 . The pipe of claim 1 wherein the pipe comprises a metallic pipe.

22 . The pipe of claim 1 wherein the pipe is manufactured from a process chosen from the group consisting of cold rolling, hot rolling, drawing, extruding and casting.

23 . The pipe of claim 1 further comprising a plate, the plate and the pipe being coupled together.

24 . The pipe of claim 9 wherein the first inner boundary defines a hollow core configured to transport therethrough a fluid.

25 . A method of protecting equipment comprising the steps of:

equipping the piece of equipment with a pipe having an outer tube and an inner tube, the outer tube overlaying the inner tube;

selecting the composition of the outer tube to exploit a first characteristic;

selecting the composition of the inner tube to exploit a second characteristic.

26 . The method of claim 25 wherein the composition of the outer tube is selected to optimize the first characteristic and the composition of the outer tube is selected to optimize the second characteristic.

27 . A heat exchange apparatus comprising:

a mounting member;

a pipe comprising

an inner tube; and

an outer tube overlaying the inner tube;

wherein the mounting member and the pipe are coupled together; and

wherein the inner tube is manufactured from a first selected material and the outer tube is manufactured from a second selected material.

The heat exchange apparatus of claim 27 wherein the first selected material is selected from the list consisting of a ferrous metal, steel, copper, aluminum, a steel ferrous alloy, a copper alloy, nickel, titanium, a bronze alloy, an aluminum-bronze alloy, and a nickel-bronze alloy and the outer tube is manufactured from a second selected material selected from the list consisting of a ferrous metal, steel, copper, aluminum, a steel ferrous alloy, a copper alloy, nickel, titanium, a bronze alloy, an aluminum-bronze alloy, and a nickel-bronze alloy.

29 . The heat exchange apparatus of claim 27 wherein the mounting member comprises a plate.

30 . The heat exchange apparatus of claim 29 wherein the plate is configured to mount together the pipe and a piece of equipment to be protected by the apparatus.
