Abstract

A computer based system can comprise an inverted index for a number of documents and a fixed-width field array storing data associated with the documents. The system provides results data using information obtained from the fixed-width field array.

Claims (51)

1 . A computer based system comprising:

an inverted index for a number of documents and;

a fixed-width field array storing data associated with the documents;

wherein the system provides result data using information obtained from the fixed-width field array.

2 . The computer-based system of claim 1 ,

wherein the fixed-width field array is memory-mapped.

3 . The computer based system of claim 1 ,

wherein the system provides search results using information obtained from the fixed-width field array.

4 . The computer based system of claim 1 ,

wherein the fixed-width field array has data indexed by document number.

5 . The computer based system of claim 1 ,

wherein the inverted index and fixed-width field are part of an archive.

6 . The computer based system of claim 5 ,

wherein certain archive updates modify the fixed-width field array without modifying the inverted index.

7 . The computer based system of claim 1 ,

wherein the fixed-width field array stores document rank values.

8 . The computer based system of claim 7 ,

wherein the rank values are used to order search results provided to the user.

9 . The computer based system of claim 8 ,

wherein the rank data is combined with search relevance data to produce the order of search results.

10 . A computer based search server comprising:

an archive including an inverted index for a number of documents and a fixed-width field array storing data associated with the documents;

wherein the search server provides search results using information obtained from the fixed-width field array;

wherein the fixed-width field array stores document rank data used to order the search results to the user.

11 . A computer based search server of claim 10 ,

wherein the fixed-width field array has data indexed by document number.

12 . The computer-based system of claim 10 , wherein the fixed-width field array is memory-mapped.

13 . A computer based search server of claim 10 ,

wherein certain archive updates modify the fixed-width field array without modifying the inverted index.

14 . A computer based search server of claim 10 ,

wherein the rank values are used to order the search results provided to the user.

15 . A computer based search server of claim 10 ,

wherein the rank data is combined with search relevance data to produce the order of search results.

16 . A computer-based search system includes:

a search API accessing data in a search server, the API adapted to find documents matching a search criterion;

one or more search server archives storing document data in an inverted index, the document data in the inverted index including at least some metadata,

wherein at least some documents have at least one field that is not placed in the inverted index.

17 . The computer-based search system of claim 16 ,

wherein the field contains values that are of a fixed width.

18 . The computer-based search system of claim 14 ,

wherein the field data are memory-mapped in an array.

19 . The computer-based search system of claim 16 ,

wherein the position in the array corresponds to the document number.

20 . The computer-based search system of claim 16 ,

wherein the field is a rank value.

21 . The computer-based search system of claim 20 ,

wherein the rank value is a search-independent rank value.

22 . The computer-based search system of claim 16 ,

wherein the documents are searched for key terms to obtain a search-dependent rank.

23 . The computer-based search system of claim 22 ,

wherein the search-dependent rank is combined with the search-independent rank to get an overall rank value.
