Abstract

Provided is a printer assembly having a refillable cartridge assembly. The cartridge assembly includes an elongate main body defining a number of rectangular ink reservoirs along a length thereof, with end reservoirs being larger than reservoirs interposed between the end reservoirs, said end reservoirs being configured to store ink more readily consumed during a printing process. The cartridge assembly also includes a lid assembly covering the main body to seal ink inside the ink reservoirs, the lid assembly having an actuator to actuate a cartridge refill unit. Also included is a printhead assembly fast with the main body and operatively fed with ink from the ink reservoirs in the main body, as well as a refill unit engageable with the lid assembly to refill at least one of the reservoirs.

Claims (8)

1. A printer assembly having a refillable cartridge assembly comprising:

an elongate main body defining a number of rectangular ink reservoirs along a length thereof, with end reservoirs being larger than reservoirs interposed between the end reservoirs, said end reservoirs being configured to store ink more readily consumed during a printing process;

a lid assembly covering the main body to seal ink inside the ink reservoirs, the lid assembly having an actuator to actuate a cartridge refill unit;

a printhead assembly fast with the main body and operatively fed with ink from the ink reservoirs in the main body; and

a refill unit engageable with the lid assembly to refill at least one of the reservoirs, the refill unit having a housing defining a fluid path in fluid communication with an outlet and configured to be operatively engaged with refill ports on the lid assembly, a fluid reservoir having an ejection port arranged in fluid communication with the fluid path inside the housing and an ejector assembly configured to incrementally eject fluid from the fluid reservoir when the assembly is actuated by the actuator during operative engagement of the print cartridge by the lid assembly; wherein,

the ejector assembly includes a piston and cylinder arrangement with the piston biased into the cylinder with a compressed spring, said ejector assembly having a pawl-and-ratchet detent preventing the biased piston entering the cylinder until the pawl is actuated by the actuator.

2. The printer assembly of claim 1 , wherein each ink reservoir includes a stack of polymer layers with a micro-capillary array of channels formed therein to form an absorbent assembly within the ink reservoir.

3. The printer assembly of claim 2 , wherein the polymer of the stack is selected from the group consisting of polycarbonate, acrylic, polysulfone, polystyrene, fluoropolymer, cyclic olefin polymer, and cyclic olefin copolymer.
