Abstract

A method for modifying the refractive index of ocular tissues. The method comprises irradiating select regions of ocular tissue with a visible or near-IR laser. The irradiation results in the formation of structures in the ocular tissue, characterized by a change in refractive index, and which exhibit little or no scattering loss.

Claims (31)

1. A method for modifying the refractive index of ocular tissue, the method comprising:

irradiating select regions of the ocular tissue with a focused, visible or near-IR laser below the optical breakdown threshold of the tissue to provide refractive structures that exhibit a change in refractive index, and exhibit little or no scattering loss; and

scanning over the select regions with the laser such that ablation or removal of the tissue is not observed in the irradiated region, wherein the focused, visible or near-IR laser has a pulse energy from 0.01 nJ to 10 nJ.

2. A method for modifying the refractive index of ocular tissue, the method comprising:

irradiating select regions of the ocular tissue with a focused, visible or near-IR laser below the optical breakdown threshold of the tissue to provide refractive structures that exhibit a change in refractive index, and exhibit little or no scattering loss; and

scanning over the select regions with the laser such that ablation or removal of the tissue is not observed in the irradiated region, wherein the region of the ocular tissue irradiated by the laser exhibits a change in refractive index of 0.001 to 0.03.

3. A method for correcting vision in a patient by modifying the refractive index of ocular tissue, the method comprising:

identifying and measuring the degree of vision correction of the patient;

determining the position and type of refractive structures to be written into the ocular tissue of the patient to correct the patient's vision; and

irradiating select regions of the ocular tissue with a focused, visible or near-IR laser below the optical breakdown threshold of the tissue to form the refractive structures, wherein the refractive structures are characterized by a change in refractive index, and exhibit little or no scattering loss; and

scanning over the select regions with the laser such that ablation or removal of the tissue is not observed in the irradiated region, wherein the ocular tissue is corneal stroma layer or lens cortex, and the focused, visible or near-IR laser has a pulse energy from 0.05 nJ to 2.0 nJ.

4. A method for modifying the refractive index of ocular tissue, the method comprising:

irradiating select regions of the ocular tissue with a focused, visible or near-IR laser below the optical breakdown threshold of the tissue to provide refractive structures that exhibit a change in refractive index, and exhibit little or no scattering loss; and

scanning over the select regions with the laser such that ablation or removal of the tissue is not observed in the irradiated region, wherein the laser has a pulse energy from 0.1 nJ to 2 nJ.

5. A method for correcting vision in a patient by modifying the refractive index of ocular tissue, the method comprising:

identifying and measuring the degree of vision correction of the patient;

determining the position and type of refractive structures to be written into the ocular tissue of the patient to correct the patient's vision; and

irradiating select regions of the ocular tissue with a focused, visible or near-IR laser below the optical breakdown threshold of the tissue to form the refractive structures, wherein the refractive structures are characterized by a change in refractive index, and exhibit little or no scattering loss; and

scanning over the select regions with the laser such that ablation or removal of the tissue is not observed in the irradiated region, wherein the laser has a pulse energy is from 0.01 nJ to 10 nJ.

6. A method for correcting vision in a patient by modifying the refractive index of ocular tissue, the method comprising:

identifying and measuring the degree of vision correction of the patient;

determining the position and type of refractive structures to be written into the ocular tissue of the patient to correct the patient's vision; and

irradiating select regions of the ocular tissue with a focused, visible or near-IR laser below the optical breakdown threshold of the tissue to form the refractive structures, wherein the refractive structures are characterized by a change in refractive index, and exhibit little or no scattering loss; and

scanning over the select regions with the laser such that ablation or removal of the tissue is not observed in the irradiated region, wherein the region of the ocular tissue irradiated by the laser exhibits a change in refractive index of 0.001 to 0.03.

7. A method for correcting vision in a patient by modifying the refractive index of corneal stroma, the method comprising:

identifying and measuring the degree of vision correction of the patient;

determining the position and type of refractive structures to be written into the corneal stroma of the patient to correct the patient's vision; and

irradiating select regions of the corneal stroma with a focused, visible or near-IR laser below the optical breakdown threshold of the stroma such that the corneal stroma irradiated by the laser exhibits a change in refractive index of 0.001 to 0.03; and

scanning over the select regions with the laser such that ablation or removal of the corneal stroma is not observed in the irradiated region.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the laser has a pulse energy from 0.1 nJ to 2 nJ.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the laser has a pulse energy is from 0.01 nJ to 10 nJ.
