Abstract

A drill bit includes a bit head and a rotating bit cone. A sealing system for the drill bit includes a seal gland and a seal retained within the seal gland. The seal gland is defined by a radial cone surface, a head sealing surface and an opposed cone sealing surface. At least one of the head sealing surface and opposed cone sealing surface is not cylindrical (i.e., the surface is conical and not parallel to an axis of rotation for the cone). Additionally, the radial cone surface may be conical (i.e., the surface does not extend perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the cone). The seal is radially compressed between the head sealing surface and the opposed cone sealing surface. The use of one or more conical surfaces in the gland is provided to bias the compressed seal into a preferred dynamic sealing zone.

Claims (46)

1. A sealing system for a drill bit including a bit head and a rotating bit cone, comprising:

a seal gland defined by a radial cone surface and further defined by a cylindrical head sealing surface and a conical cone sealing surface opposed to the cylindrical head sealing surface and formed on the rotating bit cone;

a seal radially compressed between the cylindrical head sealing surface and the opposed conical cone sealing surface;

wherein the conical cone sealing surface is connected at a first end directly to the radial cone surface and further extends radially inwardly from the radial cone surface and an angle defined between the conical cone sealing surface and the opposed cylindrical head sealing surface is about between 2 and 40 degrees; and

a radially projecting feature extending inwardly from a second end of the conical cone sealing surface, wherein the radially projecting feature comprises an inwardly sloping surface feature.

The sealing system of claim 1 wherein the sloping surface feature is defined by a conical surface having a first end directly connected to the second end of the conical cone sealing surface, and wherein an angle defined between the conical surface of the sloping surface feature and a normal to axis of cone rotation direction is between 30 and 50 degrees.

3. The sealing system of claim 1 wherein the radially projecting feature assists in biasing the radially compressed seal toward the radial cone surface.

4. The sealing system of claim 1 wherein the radially projecting feature assists in biasing the radially compressed seal against the radial cone surface.

5. The sealing system of claim 1 wherein the opposed conical cone sealing surface assists in biasing the radially compressed seal against the radial cone surface.

6. The sealing system of claim 1 wherein the opposed conical cone sealing surface assists in biasing the radially compressed seal towards the radial cone surface.

7. A sealing system for a drill bit including a bit head and a rotating bit cone, comprising:

a seal gland defined by a radial cone surface and further defined by a head sealing surface and a cone sealing surface opposed to the head sealing surface and formed on the rotating bit cone;

a seal radially compressed between the head sealing surface and the opposed cone sealing surface;

wherein the cone sealing surface is connected at a first end directly to the radial cone surface and further extends radially inwardly therefrom at an angle defined between the cone sealing surface and the opposed head sealing surface of about between 2 and 40 degrees; and

a radially projecting feature extending inwardly from a second end of the cone sealing surface, wherein the radially projecting feature comprises a sloping surface feature.

The sealing system of claim 7 wherein the sloping surface feature is defined by a conical surface having a first end directly connected to the second end of the cone sealing surface, and wherein an angle defined between the conical surface of the sloping surface feature and a direction normal to cone axis of rotation is between 30 and 50 degrees.

9. The sealing system of claim 7 wherein the radially projecting feature assists in biasing the radially compressed seal against the radial cone surface.

10. The sealing system of claim 7 wherein the radially projecting feature assists in biasing the radially compressed seal towards the radial cone surface.

11. The sealing system of claim 7 wherein the opposed cone sealing surface assists in biasing the radially compressed seal against the radial cone surface.

12. The sealing system of claim 7 wherein the opposed cone sealing surface assists in biasing the radially compressed seal towards the radial cone surface.

13. A sealing system for a drill bit including a bit head and a rotating bit cone, comprising:

a seal gland defined by a radial cone surface and further defined by a cylindrical head sealing surface and a conical cone sealing surface opposed to the cylindrical head sealing surface and formed on the rotating bit cone;

a seal radially compressed between the cylindrical head sealing surface and the opposed conical cone sealing surface;

wherein the conical cone sealing surface is connected at a first end to the radial cone surface without presence of an intervening cone surface and further extends radially inwardly from the radial cone surface and an angle defined between the conical cone sealing surface and the opposed cylindrical head sealing surface is about between 2 and 40 degrees.

14. The sealing system of claim 13 further comprising a radially projecting feature extending inwardly from a second end of the conical cone sealing surface.

15. The sealing system of claim 14 wherein the radially projecting feature comprises an inwardly extending normal surface having a first end directly connected to the second end of the conical cone sealing surface.

16. The sealing system of claim 14 wherein the radially projecting feature comprises an inwardly sloping surface feature.

17. The sealing system of claim 16 wherein the sloping surface feature is defined by a conical surface having a first end directly connected to the second end of the conical cone sealing surface, and wherein an angle defined between the conical surface of the sloping surface feature and a normal to axis of cone rotation direction is between 30 and 50 degrees.

18. The sealing system of claim 14 wherein the radially projecting feature assists in biasing the radially compressed seal toward the radial cone surface.

19. The sealing system of claim 14 wherein the radially projecting feature assists in biasing the radially compressed seal against the radial cone surface.

20. The sealing system of claim 13 wherein the opposed conical cone sealing surface assists in biasing the radially compressed seal against the radial cone surface.

21. The sealing system of claim 13 wherein the opposed conical cone sealing surface assists in biasing the radially compressed seal towards the radial cone surface.

22. A sealing system for a drill bit including a bit head and a rotating bit cone, comprising:

a seal gland defined by a radial cone surface and further defined by a head sealing surface and a cone sealing surface opposed to the head sealing surface and formed on the rotating bit cone;

a seal radially compressed between the head sealing surface and the opposed cone sealing surface;

wherein the cone sealing surface is connected at a first end to the radial cone surface without presence of an intervening cone surface and further extends radially inwardly therefrom at an angle defined between the cone sealing surface and the opposed head sealing surface of about between 2 and 40 degrees.

23. The sealing system of claim 22 further comprising a radially projecting feature extending inwardly from a second end of the cone sealing surface.

24. The sealing system of claim 23 wherein the radially projecting feature comprises an inwardly extending surface normal to an axis of cone rotation having a first end directly connected to the second end of the conical cone sealing surface.

25. The sealing system of claim 23 wherein the radially projecting feature comprises a sloping surface feature.

26. The sealing system of claim 25 wherein the sloping surface feature is defined by a conical surface having a first end directly connected to the second end of the cone sealing surface, and wherein an angle defined between the conical surface of the sloping surface feature and a direction normal to cone axis of rotation is between 30 and 50 degrees.

27. The sealing system of claim 23 wherein the radially projecting feature assists in biasing the radially compressed seal against the radial cone surface.

28. The sealing system of claim 23 wherein the radially projecting feature assists in biasing the radially compressed seal towards the radial cone surface.

29. The sealing system of claim 22 wherein the opposed second cone sealing surface assists in biasing the radially compressed seal against the radial cone surface.

30. The sealing system of claim 22 wherein the opposed second cone sealing surface assists in biasing the radially compressed seal towards the radial cone surface.

31. The sealing system of claim 22 wherein the head sealing surface and the opposed cone sealing surface are both conical surfaces.

32. The sealing system of claim 22 wherein the cone sealing surface and the radial cone surface are both conical surfaces.
