Disposable infusion device with occlusion detector
A disposable wearable infusion device comprises a reservoir that holds a liquid medicament and a cannula having a distal end that delivers the liquid medicament to a patient The device further comprises a pump that displaces a volume of the liquid medicament along a path to the cannula when actuated and a lock-out that precludes actuation of the pump when an occlusion occurs within the path to the distal end of the cannula.
1. A disposable wearable infusion device comprising:
a reservoir that holds a liquid medicament;
a cannula having a distal end that delivers the liquid medicament to a patient;
a pump that displaces a volume of the liquid medicament along a path to the distal end of the cannula when actuated; and
a lock-out that mechanically and immediately precludes actuation of the pump in response to an occlusion within the path to the distal end of the cannula.
2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the path comprises a conduit that conducts the liquid medicament to the distal end of the cannula and wherein the lock-out includes a pressure detector that detects back pressure within the conduit when an occlusion occurs within the conduit.
3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the conduit extends from the pump to the distal end of the cannula.
4. The device of claim 2 , wherein the pressure detector comprises a flexible diaphragm that deflects responsive to back pressure within the conduit.
5. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a linkage that actuates the pump and wherein the lock-out disables the linkage in response to an occlusion within the path to the distal end of the cannula.
6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the path comprises a conduit that conducts the liquid medicament to the distal end of the cannula and wherein the lock-out includes a pressure detector that detects back pressure within the conduit when an occlusion occurs within the conduit.
7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the pressure detector comprises a flexible diaphragm that deflects responsive to back pressure within the conduit.
8. The device of claim 7 , further comprising a linkage that actuates the pump and wherein deflection of the diaphragm disables the linkage in response to an occlusion within the conduit to the outlet.
9. The device of claim 8 , further comprising a deflectable stop that is deflected into the linkage by the diaphragm in response to an occlusion within the conduit to the distal end of the cannula.
10. A disposable wearable infusion device comprising:
a reservoir that holds a liquid medicament;
a cannula having a distal end that delivers the liquid medicament to a patient;
a pump that displaces a volume of the liquid medicament from the reservoir to the distal end of the cannula when actuated;
a conduit that conducts the displaced liquid medicament to the distal end of the cannula; and
a lock-out including a liquid medicament pressure detector that immediately and mechanically precludes actuation of the pump in response to an occlusion within the conduit to the distal end of the cannula.
11. The device of claim 10 , wherein the pressure detector is arranged to detect back pressure within the conduit when an occlusion occurs within the conduit.
12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the conduit extends from the pump to the distal end of the cannula.
13. The device of claim 12 , wherein the pressure detector comprises a flexible diaphragm that deflects responsive to back pressure within the conduit.
14. The device of claim 13 , further comprising a linkage that actuates the pump and wherein deflection of the diaphragm disables the linkage in response to an occlusion within the conduit to the distal end of the cannula.
15. The device of claim 14 , further comprising a deflectable stop that is deflected into the linkage by the diaphragm in response to an occlusion within the conduit to the distal end of the cannula.
16. A disposable wearable infusion device comprising:
a reservoir that holds a liquid medicament;
a cannula having a distal end that delivers the liquid medicament to a patient;
a pump that displaces a volume of the liquid medicament from the reservoir to the distal end of the cannula when actuated;
a conduit that extends from the pump to the cannula to conduct the displaced liquid medicament to the distal end of the cannula;
a linkage that actuates the pump; and
a lock-out including a liquid medicament pressure detector that immediately and mechanically disables the linkage to preclude actuation of the pump in response to an occlusion within the conduit to the distal end of the cannula.
17. The device of claim 16 , wherein the pressure detector comprises a flexible diaphragm that deflects responsive to back pressure within the conduit.
18. The device of claim 17 , wherein deflection of the flexible diaphragm disables the linkage in response to an occlusion within the conduit to the distal end of the cannula.
19. The device of claim 18 , further comprising a deflectable stop that is deflected into the linkage by the diaphragm in response to an occlusion within the conduit to the distal end of the cannula.
20. The device of claim 19 , wherein the linkage and/or the deflectable stop are arranged to permanently lock the device and prevent further device actuation.
21. A disposable wearable infusion device comprising:
a base, the base having an adhesive layer for affixing the infusion device to the skin of a patient, an expandable/deflatable reservoir that holds a liquid medicament;
a cannula having a distal end that delivers the liquid medicament to a patient;
a pump that displaces a volume of the liquid medicament from the reservoir to the distal end of the cannula, when actuated;
a conduit that extends from the pump to the cannula to conduct the displaced liquid medicament to the distal end of the cannula;
a linkage that actuates the pump; and
a lock-out including a liquid medicament pressure detector that immediately and mechaically disables the linkage to preclude actuation of the pump in response to an occlusion within the conduit to the distal end of the cannula,
wherein the pressure detector comprises a flexible diaphragm that deflects responsive to back pressure within the conduit and deflection of the diaphragm disables the linkage in response to an occlusion within the conduit to the distal end of the cannula; and
wherein the lock-out further includes a deflectable stop that is deflected into the linkage by the diaphragm in response to an occlusion within the conduit to the distal end of the cannula to immediately and mechanically disable the linkage and preclude actuation of the pump.
