Abstract

A portable induction heating tool is provided as a membrane roofing tool for use in sealing anchor plates with a heat-activated adhesive to a membrane roofing member. The tool uses two different audible tones so two tools can be used simultaneously on a single roof, while allowing a user to easily distinguish between the operation of both tools. The main housing containing electronics is weather-tight, and requires no forced-cooling devices. The controller automatically performs data logging functions, such as counting the number of anchor plates per job or per day that have been properly placed, counting the number of activation events for a tool's life, tracking the number of faults which occur as the tool is being used, and the controller can identify the type of fault that occurs during operation of the tool. The controller also stores energy setting changes in memory.

Claims (17)

1. An induction heating apparatus, comprising: (a) a lower base portion; (b) a body portion spaced from said lower base portion; (c) a support member mechanically maintaining said lower base portion and said body portion in said spaced orientation; (d) a handle portion mechanically attached to an upper area of said body portion; (e) an electrical power supply and a controller, positioned in an interior space defined by said body portion; and (f) an induction coil in said base portion; wherein:

(g) said lower base portion defines a predetermined footprint area, and said induction heating apparatus exhibits a sufficiently low center of gravity, which allows said induction heating apparatus to be placed on sloped surfaces without tipping over;

(h) said body portion includes a substantially liquid-tight housing, such that it may be left outdoors without incurring damage due to wet weather; and

(i) said body portion has a plurality of protruding heat sink elements comprising a plurality of substantially parallel corrugated fins protruding from said body portion positioned on a portion of a surface of said housing of the body portion to dissipate thermal energy from interior space of the body portion, without the use of any forced cooling mechanism.

2. The induction heating apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

said heat sink elements are mounted on a single structure that is substantially perpendicular to said plurality of corrugated fins.

3. The induction heating apparatus of claim 2 , wherein said single structure comprises a portion of said substantially liquid-tight housing.

4. The induction heating apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said body portion is free from liquid cooling tubes or movable fans.

5. The induction heating apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a manually-operable actuation device located in said handle portion.

6. The induction heating apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a display and a plurality of user-actuated controls on an upper surface of said body portion.

7. The induction heating apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

said handle is substantially arcuate in shape.

8. The induction heating apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising: a second plurality of heat sink elements that are positioned on an upper surface of said base portion.

The induction heating apparatus of claim 7 , wherein said second plurality of heat sink elements is mounted to a dielectric member comprising an electrical insulator, thereby reducing the rise in temperature of said dielectric member from the magnetic field produced by said induction coil when the apparatus is in operation.

10. The induction heating apparatus of claim 7 , wherein said induction coil is positioned proximal to a lower surface of said base portion.

11. The induction heating apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said dielectric member is positioned proximate said induction coil, such that said second plurality of heat sink elements provides enhanced thermal energy transfer away from said induction coil.

12. The induction heating apparatus of claim 1 , comprising a defined target area on an upper surface of said lower base portion for assisting in placement of said induction heating apparatus at said specific second location.
