Abstract

The disclosure describes devices and methods for asymmetrical irradiation at a body cavity or site, such as after removal of tissue, e.g. biopsy or cancer. One device includes a lumen which is off-set or off-settable from a longitudinal axis to increase the intensity of radiation received from a radiation source by a first tissue portion surrounding the body cavity and to reduce or minimize radiation received by a second tissue portion (e.g. healthy tissue) surrounding the body cavity.

Claims (17)

1. A method for irradiating tissue surrounding a body cavity of a patient, comprising:

a) providing a device comprising

i. an elongate outer catheter having a proximal end, a distal end, a treatment portion proximal to the distal end, an inner lumen extending within the outer catheter to the treatment location; and

ii. an elongate inner catheter configured to be rotatably disposed within the outer catheter and which has a proximal end, a distal end, a longitudinal axis and an inner lumen off-set in its entirety from the longitudinal axis which extends within the inner catheter to the treatment location in the outer catheter and which is configured to receive the radiation source;

b) inserting the device into the patient until the treatment location is deployed within the body cavity;

c) rotating the inner catheter relative to the outer catheter so that the off-set inner lumen is closer to a first portion of tissue surrounding the body cavity than a second portion of tissue surrounding the body cavity; and

d) irradiating tissue surrounding the body cavity by a radiation source in the off-set inner lumen within the treatment location to asymmetrically irradiate tissue at the body site.

2. The method of claim 1 including positioning a radiation shielding component between the radiation source and the second tissue portion to shield the second tissue portion from radiation emitted from the radiation source.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the outer catheter has a cavity filling member provided on the distal portion thereof surrounding the treatment location and the cavity filling member is expanded within the cavity before irradiating tissue surrounding the cavity.

4. A method for irradiating tissue surrounding a body cavity of a patient, comprising:

a) providing a device comprising

i. an elongate outer catheter having a proximal end, a distal end, a treatment portion proximal to the distal end, an inner lumen extending within the outer catheter to the treatment location; and

ii. an elongate inner catheter which has a proximal end, a distal end, a longitudinal axis, a central lumen along the longitudinal axis, and at least one off-set guide in a distal shaft portion of the inner catheter having an off-set lumen that is off-set from a longitudinal axis the central lumen and is configured to receive a radiation source;

b) inserting the device into the patient until the treatment location is deployed within the body cavity;

c) rotating the inner catheter so that the at least one off-set guide having the off-set lumen is closer to a first portion of tissue surrounding the body cavity than a second portion of tissue surrounding the body cavity; and

d) irradiating tissue surrounding the body cavity by a radiation source in the at least one off-set guide to asymmetrically irradiate tissue at the body site.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the outer catheter has a cavity filling member provided on the distal portion thereof surrounding the at least one off-set guide and the cavity filling member is expanded within the cavity before irradiating tissue surrounding the cavity.
