Abstract

A micro or nanoparticle ( 206 ) can include or can be a taggant. The particle ( 206 ) has a shape corresponding to a mold and includes unique characteristics. The unique characteristics can be the shape of the particle, molecular content of the particle, or physical characteristics incorporated into or onto the particle. In use, the taggant can be incorporated into an article of manufacture and includes characteristics configured to identify the origin, authenticity, expiration, owner or the like of the article.

Claims (33)

1 . A taggant, comprising:

a taggant particle having a predetermined shape, wherein the taggant particle is less than about 50 microns in a broadest dimension and wherein the taggant particle includes a unique characteristic.

2 . The taggant of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of taggant particles, wherein each taggant particle of the plurality of the taggant particles is substantially uniform in geometric shape.

3 . The taggant of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of taggant particles, wherein taggant particles of the plurality of taggant particles have a plurality of predetermined shapes.

20 . The taggant of claim 1 , wherein the unique characteristic includes features on a surface of the taggant particle.

21 . The taggant of claim 20 , wherein the features include grooves patterned such that the grooves include information.

22 . The taggant of claim 1 , wherein the taggant particle comprises a degradable material.

23 . The taggant of claim 1 , wherein the unique characteristic comprises a predetermined three dimensional geometric shape.

25 . The taggant of claim 23 , wherein the geometric shape protrudes from the taggant particle.

26 . The taggant of claim 23 , further comprising a plurality of geometric shapes configured on each taggant particle.

29 . The taggant of claim 26 , wherein the plurality of geometric shapes are arranged to form a pattern.

30 . The taggant of claim 1 , wherein the unique characteristic includes a radio frequency identification.

31 . The taggant of claim 30 , wherein the radio frequency identification is passive.

32 . The taggant of claim 30 , wherein the radio frequency identification is active.

34 . The taggant of claim 1 , wherein the taggant particle defines a recess and the recess is configured and dimensioned to receive the unique characteristic.

37 . The taggant of claim 1 , wherein the unique characteristic includes a composition configured to give the taggant particle a chemical, physical, or optical signature.

39 . The taggant of claim 1 , wherein the taggant particle is not visible to the human eye.

64 . A method of making a taggant, comprising:

placing material into a cavity formed in a fluoropolymer material, wherein the cavity is less than about 50 microns in a broadest dimension;

treating the material in the cavity to form a taggant, wherein a characteristic of the cavity imparts a unique characteristic to the taggant; and

removing the taggant from the cavity.

65 . The method of claim 64 , wherein the fluoropolymer material comprises perfluoropolyether.

67 . The method of claim 64 , wherein the unique characteristic includes a geometric shape of the taggant, a chemical signature, a spectral signature, an active radio frequency identification, a passive radio frequency identification, or surface features.

A taggant, comprising: a plurality of taggant particles having a broadest dimension of less than about 5 micrometers, wherein each taggant particle of the plurality of taggant particles has a substantially similar geometric shape and wherein each of the taggant particles includes a unique characteristic selected from the group consisting of the geometric shape, a chemical signature, a spectral signature, an active radio frequency identification, a passive radio frequency identification, or surface features.
