Abstract

A light emitting panel, film or substrate assembly includes an optically conductive panel, film or substrate having at least one light input surface defined by at least one edge of a slot, cavity, opening or hole in which at least one LED light source having a greater width than height is positioned adjacent to the light input surface for directing light into the panel, film or substrate. The LED light source is configured to generate light having an output distribution defined by a greater width component than height component, the height component substantially corresponding to or less than the thickness of the light input surface.

Claims (23)

1. A light emitting panel, film or substrate assembly comprising:

an optically conductive panel, film or substrate having a top surface and a bottom surface, a greater cross-sectional width than thickness and at least one light input surface defined by at least one edge of a slot, cavity, opening or hole extending between the top and bottom surfaces, wherein the at least one slot, cavity, opening or hole is configured to receive at least one light source therein,

at least one light source having or being comprised of at least one LED chip, the light source having a greater width than height positioned within the slot, cavity, opening or hole and adjacent to the light input surface for directing light into the panel, film or substrate, the height of the at least one light source substantially corresponding to the thickness of the panel, film or substrate and the width of the at least one light source being substantially parallel to the top surface or bottom surface of the panel, film or substrate, the at least one light source being configured to generate light having an output distribution defined by a greater width component than height component, the height component of the output distribution substantially corresponding to or less than the thickness of the light input surface, and

the panel, film or substrate having at least one output region, and a pattern of deformities configured to cause light to be emitted from the at least one output region.

2. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the light emitted from the at least one light source is substantially within a plane that is defined by the top surface or bottom surface of the panel, film or substrate.

3. The assembly of claim 2 wherein the light emitted from the at least one light source is substantially in one direction.

4. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the slot, cavity, opening or hole has a plurality of light input surfaces.

5. The assembly of claim 1 wherein there are a plurality of slots, cavities, openings, or holes extending between the top and bottom surfaces.

6. The assembly of claim 5 wherein there are a plurality of light sources in the plurality of slots, cavities, openings or holes.

7. The assembly of claim 5 wherein there is at least one light source in each of the slots, cavities, openings, or holes.

8. The assembly of claim 5 wherein there are at least two light sources that emit light in different directions in the panel, film or substrate relative to each other.

9. The assembly of claim 5 wherein an edge of at least one of the slots, cavities, openings, or holes forms a reflective or refractive surface that redirects a portion of the light in the panel, film or substrate.

10. The assembly of claim 5 wherein there are at least two light sources that emit light of different emission wavelengths.

11. The assembly of claim 1 wherein faceted surfaces are in close proximity to the at least one light source.

12. The assembly of claim 11 wherein a group of the faceted surfaces is associated with the at least one light source.

13. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the at least one light source is embedded, potted, bonded, molded, cast or attached to the panel, film or substrate.

14. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the panel, film or substrate comprises multiple layers.

15. The assembly of claim 14 wherein at least one of the layers has a different index of refraction.

16. The assembly of claim 1 further comprising a sheet, film, or substrate overlying at least a portion of the optically conductive panel, film or substrate for controlling the light emitted from the assembly to suit a particular application.

17. The assembly of claim 16 wherein a coating, paint, ink or epoxy is applied to the sheet, film, or substrate.

18. The assembly of claim 1 wherein a coating, paint, ink or epoxy is applied to the optically conductive panel, film or substrate.

19. A membrane switch device comprising the assembly of claim 1 .

20. An apparatus comprising the membrane switch device of claim 19 and a liquid crystal display.
