Abstract

A filter element includes a filter media pack, a frame, an annular seal, and a sealing means independent of the annular seal. The frame is integrally secured to the fluted filter media pack with material of the frame integrally bonding the frame thereto.

Claims (29)

1. A filter element comprising:

a fluted filter media pack having an inlet flow face, outlet flow face and a central axis passing through the inlet flow face and the outlet flow face, the fluted filter media pack including a face sheet and a convoluted sheet secured together and wound about the central axis to define a plurality of flutes including first flutes closed proximate the inlet flow face and second flutes closed proximate the outlet flow face;

a frame integrally secured to the fluted filter media pack with material of the frame integrally bonding the frame thereto; and

wherein the fluted filter media is partially embedded in the frame.

2. A filter element of claim 1 , wherein the fluted filter media pack further includes a protective wrapper surrounding a periphery of the face sheet.

3. A filter element of claim 2 , wherein the protective wrapper is formed of a spunbounded polymeric material.

4. A filter element of claim 2 , wherein the protective wrapper is formed of a plastic material.

5. A filter element of claim 2 , wherein the protective wrapper is formed of an impermeable material.

6. The filter element of claim 1 , wherein material of the frame partially enters some flutes.

7. The filter element of claim 1 , wherein the frame circumscribes an outer periphery of the filter media pack proximate at least one of the flow faces.

8. The filter element of claim 1 , wherein the frame is a protective border frame.

9. The filter element of claim 8 , wherein the protective border frame is annular in its shape, the protective border frame having an annular portion and a plurality of ribs.

10. The filter element of claim 8 , wherein the filter media pack is embedded in the annular portion and the plurality of ribs.

11. The filter element of claim 1 , wherein the frame is a seal support frame.

12. The filter element of claim 11 , wherein the seal support frame carries an annular seal.

13. The filter element of claim 12 , wherein the seal support frame and the annular seal are separately molded.

14. The filter element of claim 12 , wherein the annular seal is formed of softer polymeric material than a polymeric material of the seal support frame.

15. The filter element of claim 14 , wherein the annular seal is formed of an urethane foam material and the seal support frame is formed of a rigid urethane; wherein the urethane foam material is softer and more resilient than the rigid urethane.

16. The filter element of claim 1 , wherein the frame is formed of urethane.

17. The filter element of claim 16 , wherein the urethane has a durometer reading of greater than 60A (measured by ASTM D2240 type A scale, using a Shore Durometer Type A testing equipment).

18. The filter element of claim 16 , wherein the urethane has a durometer reading of between 90A and 95 A (measured by ASTM D2240 type A scale, using a Shore Durometer Type A testing equipment).

19. The filter element of claim 1 , wherein the frame is formed of a rigid urethane, and does not perform a sealing function against a filter housing.

20. The filter element of claim 1 , wherein the frame is formed at least in part of a thermoplastic polymer wherein the filter media pack is plastic welded.

21. A filter element comprising:

a fluted filter media pack having an inlet flow face, outlet flow face and a central axis passing through the inlet flow face and the outlet flow face, the fluted filter media pack including a face sheet and a convoluted sheet secured together and wound about the central axis to define a plurality of flutes including first flutes closed proximate the inlet flow face and second flutes closed proximate the outlet flow face;

a frame integrally secured to the fluted filter media pack with material of the frame integrally bonding the frame thereto; and

wherein the frame includes a plurality of location reliefs around a periphery of the frame.

22. The filter element of claim 21 , wherein each of the plurality of reliefs is recessed from the periphery of the frame, wherein a thickness of frame in areas having the plurality of reliefs is thinner than areas of the frame free of reliefs.

23. The filter element of claim 21 , wherein a shape of each of the plurality of reliefs match a shape of a corresponding locating rib of a mold, wherein the frame is molded to the fluted filter media pack.
