Abstract

A multicolor direct thermal imaging method wherein a multicolor image is formed in a thermal imaging member comprising at least first and second different image-forming compositions and a thermal printer for use in practicing the method. Heat is applied to at least the second image-forming composition while the first image-forming composition is at a first baseline temperature (T 1 ) to form an image in at least the second image-forming composition, and heat is applied to at least the first image-forming composition while it is at a second baseline temperature (T 2 ) to form an image in at least the first image-forming composition, wherein T 1 is different from T 2 .

Claims (32)

1. A thermal printer comprising:

transporting means for transporting a thermal imaging member:

at least a first and a second thermal printing head, each configured to make contact with the same surface of said thermal imaging member and each comprising a row of heating elements, said rows being oriented transverse to the direction of transport of said thermal imaging member; and

at least one preheating means,

wherein said preheating means is configured to heat said thermal imaging member in the region between said row of heating elements of said first thermal printing head and said row of heating elements of said second thermal printing head.

2. A thermal printer as described in claim 1 wherein said first and second thermal printing heads and said preheating means substantially span said thermal imaging member in a direction perpendicular to the direction of transport of said thermal imaging member.

3. A thermal printer as described in claim 1 in which said preheating means is a glaze element of at least one of the thermal printing heads.

4. A thermal printer as described in claim 3 in which means are provided, separate from the row of heating elements, for heating the glaze element of at least one of the thermal printing heads.

5. A thermal printer as described in claim 1 in which said preheating means is/are separate from a glaze element of either thermal printing head.

6. A thermal printer as described in claim 5 in which said first thermal printing head, said second thermal printing head, and said preheating means each make contact at different positions on the same surface of said thermal imaging member.

7. A thermal printer as described in claim 5 in which said preheating means spans said thermal imaging member in a direction perpendicular to the motion of said thermal imaging member and heats said thermal imaging member uniformly in a direction perpendicular to the motion of said thermal imaging member.

8. A thermal printer as described in claim 1 in which said first and said second thermal printing heads are not identical.

9. The thermal printer of claim 8 in which said first and said second thermal printing heads have a different number of heating elements per unit length.

10. The thermal printer of claim 8 in which said first and said second thermal printing heads have a different glaze element thickness.

11. The thermal printer of claim 8 in which said first and said second thermal printing heads have a different average length of heating element measured in the direction perpendicular to the row of heating elements.

12. A thermal printer comprising:

transporting means for transporting a thermal imaging member;

at least a first and a second thermal printing head, each configured to make contact with the same surface of said thermal imaging member and each comprising a row of heating elements, said rows being oriented transverse to the direction of transport of said thermal imaging member; and

at least one preheating means,

in which said first and said second thermal printing heads are not identical, said thermal printing heads differing by at least one feature from the list consisting of:

number of heating elements per unit length;

glaze element thickness; and

average length of heating element measured in the direction perpendicular to the row of heating elements.

13. The thermal printer of claim 12 in which said first and said second thermal printing heads have a different number of heating elements per unit length.

14. The thermal printer of claim 12 in which said first and said second thermal printing heads have a different glaze element thickness.

15. The thermal printer of claim 12 in which said first and said second thermal printing heads have a different average length of heating element measured in the direction perpendicular to the row of heating elements.

16. A thermal printer comprising:

transporting means for transporting a thermal imaging member;

at least a first and a second thermal printing head, each configured to make contact with the same surface of said thermal imaging member and each comprising a row of heating elements, said rows being oriented transverse to the direction of transport of said thermal imaging member and located on a glaze support; and

at least one preheating means,

in which said preheating means is a glaze element of at least one of the thermal printing heads.

17. A thermal printer as described in claim 16 in which means are provided, separate from the row of heating elements, for heating the glaze element of at least one of the thermal printing heads.
