Abstract

Hermetically sealed enclosures and constructions are disclosed for use in endoscopic systems, particularly endoscopic systems with electronic imaging and illumination systems in the enclosures. Compound optical windows are also disclosed for use in the systems. The compound optical windows may have separate panes for an imaging system and an illumination system, and contrast-reducing optical boundaries are between panes.

Claims (13)

1. A windowed closure for an objective head for an endoscope, the windowed closure comprising:

a metal material having at least a receiver for receiving at least one pane for an imaging system and at least one pane for an illumination system comprising a plurality of fiber optic light bundles; and

a plurality of panes including the at least one pane for the imaging system and the at least one pane for the illumination system disposed in the receiver and joined to the receiver by a melted-metal seal;

wherein the closure is adapted to connected to an endoscope shaft with the at least one pane for the imaging system in optical alignment with the imaging system and the at least one pane for the illumination system in optical alignment with the illumination system,

wherein the receiver includes the plurality of panes arranged as a cocentric compound window, the at least one pane for the imaging system is configured to align optically with the imaging system and the at least one pabe for the illumination system is configured to align optically with the illumination system.

2. The closure of claim 1 wherein the closure comprises a cap that complementarily abuts, slides over, or fits within the shaft.

3. The closure of claim 2 wherein the at least one pane of the plurality of panes is joined to the closure via the melted-metal seal comprising gold.

4. The closure of claim 1 wherein an optical boundary is located on the receiver between adjacent edges of the panes for the imaging system and the illumination system to reduce transmission of light across the optical boundary between the panes.

5. The closure of claim 4 wherein the optical boundary comprises an opaque material.

6. The closure of claim 1 wherein the closure comprises stainless steel.

7. The closure of claim 1 wherein a the plurality of panes comprise an optical sapphire.

8. The closure of claim 7 wherein the closure comprises stainless steel and the pane is joined to the closure by the melted-metal seal comprising gold.

9. The closure of claim 7 wherein the sapphire is metallized with gold or a compatible metal before joining.
