Abstract

A composition of matter comprising an article derived from a composition containing: a. from about 30 to 80 wt. % of a polycarbonate component, b. from about 5 to about 50 wt. % of a polyester component, wherein when polybutylene terephthalate is present in the composition, the polybutylene terephthalate is present in conjunction with at least one other polyester that is not polybutylene terephthalate; c. about 2 to about 25 wt. % of an impact modifier; and d. a gloss reducing effective amount of a multifunctional additive comprising at least one epoxy group. The invention also includes injection molding processes, thermoforming processes for making articles.

Claims (39)

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said multifunctional additive reduces gloss by a least about 15% at 60° when measured with a gloss meter.

3. An article comprising the composition of claim 1 , wherein the article is an injected molded article, wherein the article has a gloss below 5 gloss units when measured at 20 incident angle with a gloss meter and wherein the multifunctional additive reduces gloss by a least about 10% at 60°.

4. An article comprising the composition of claim 1 , wherein the article is a thermoformed article, wherein the article has a gloss below 5 gloss units when measured at 20 incident angle with a gloss meter and wherein the multifunctional additive reduces gloss by a least about 10% at 60°.

5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the multifunctional additive is beta-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)ethyltriethoxysilane.

6. The molding composition of claim 1 , wherein the polyester is selected from the group consisting of, poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(1,4-butylene terephthalate), poly(ethylene naphthanoate), poly(butylene naphthanoate), poly(cyclohexanedimethylene terephthalate), cyclohexanedimethanol modified poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(propylene terephthalate), and combinations thereof.

7. The molding composition of claim 1 , wherein the polyester is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene terephthalate, polybutylene terephthalate, and a combination thereof.

8. The molding composition of claim 1 , wherein the multifunctional additive reduces gloss by a least about 20% at 60°.

9. The molding composition of claim 1 , wherein the multifunctional additive is selected from the group consisting of trimethoxy silanes, triethoxy silanes, and combinations thereof.

10. The molding composition of claim 1 , wherein the multifunctional additive compound is beta-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)ethyltriethoxysilane, beta-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)ethyltrimethoxysilane, or 3-glycidoxypropyltriethoxysilane.

11. A process for making an article by injection molding comprising:

(a) heating a composition to a temperature that is at least the melting point of the composition, to provide a viscous liquid

(b) injecting the viscous liquid under pressure into a mold cavity dimensioned to the length, width, and height of a the article,

(c) allowing the injection molded article to cool and solidify into the article, and

(d) removing the article from the mold cavity;

wherein the composition comprises, based on the total weight of the composition:

1) from about 45 to 75 wt. % of a polycarbonate component,

2) from about 10 to 45 wt. % of a polyester component, wherein when polybutylene terephthalate is present in the composition, the polybutylene terephthalate is present in conjunction with at least one other polyester that is not polybutylene terephthalate;

3) from about 4 to 20 wt. % of an impact modifier; and

4) from about 0.1 to 2.0 wt. % of a multifunctional additive comprising an epoxy group and a silane group; and

the viscosity of the composition is less than about 500 Pa-s at 271° C. and 640 s −1 as measured by capillary rheometry following the ISO 11443 standard; and wherein the article has a gloss below 5 gloss units when measured at 20 incident angle with a gloss meter and wherein the multifunctional additive reduces gloss by a least about 10% at 60°.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the multifunctional additive is beta-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)ethyltriethoxysilane.

13. A thermo-forming process for making an article comprising:

(a) extruding a sheet having at least one layer from a composition having a viscosity of less than about 500 Pa-s at 271° C. and 640 s −1 as measured by capillary rheometry following the ISO 11443 standard, and comprising, based on the total weight of the composition:
