Abstract

A label-wrapped foam cups combines a label in the shape of an annular section with a foam cup having a frusto-conical shape by wrapping the label around a foam cup and securing the label to the foam cup with a patterned adhesive. Text and graphics are printed on a front surface of the labels and a patterned adhesive is printed on a back surface of the labels. The patterned adhesive includes discontinuous deposits of adhesive that bond the label to the foam cup and form corresponding undulations in the front surface of the label. The adhesive pattern can be printed in registry with the text and graphics to provided enhanced visual effects.

Claims (36)

1. A label-wrapped foam cup comprising

a foam cup having an open end and a closed end joined by a peripheral wall including inner and outer wall surfaces,

the peripheral wall and closed end of the foam cup being made of foam and the foam of the peripheral wall and closed end being arranged in shape for holding liquids,

a label wrapped in a frusto-conical form around the outer wall surface of the foam cup,

the label having continuous front and back surfaces,

printed matter on the front surface of the label,

and

a patterned adhesive including discontinuous deposits of adhesive on the continuous back surface of the label that bond the label to the outer wall surface of the foam cup and form undulations corresponding to the discontinuous deposits in the continuous front surface of the label.

2. The cup of claim 1 in which the foam cup is made of expanded polystyrene, the adhesive is a heat-activated adhesive, and the deposits of adhesive melt into surface interstices between beaded structures of the foam cup.

3. The cup of claim 2 in which the deposits of adhesive have a thickness that is greater than an average depth of the surface interstices for forming the corresponding undulations in the continuous front surface of the label.

4. The cup of claim 1 in which the label is divided into annular sections, including first and second annular sections, a continuous adhesive is applied to the first annular section, and the discontinuous adhesive is applied to the second annular section.

5. The cup of claim 4 in which the first annular section is adjacent to the open end of the foam cup.

6. The cup of claim 4 in which the cup is one of a plurality of cups subject to stacking one inside the other, and the first annular section includes a region of contact with another of the cups within a stack.

7. The cup of claim 1 in which the discontinuous deposits of adhesive are applied to the continuous back surface of the label as a plurality of lines.

8. The cup of claim 7 in which the plurality of lines of adhesive form a crisscross pattern.

9. The cup of claim 1 in which the discontinuous deposits of adhesive are applied to the continuous back surface of the label as a plurality of beads.

10. The cup of claim 9 in which the plurality of beads of adhesive are distributed in an array pattern.

11. The cup of claim 1 in which the discontinuous deposits of adhesive vary in density along the outer wall surface of the cup in a direction between the open and closed ends of the cup.

12. The cup of claim 1 in which the discontinuous deposits of adhesive include individual deposits of the adhesive vary in volume along the outer wall surface of the cup in a direction between the open and closed ends of the cup.

13. The cup of claim 1 in which the discontinuous deposits of adhesive have a thickness after melting into engagement with the foam cup that offsets the label from the foam cup and forms spaces between the label and the foam cup adjacent to the deposits of adhesive.

14. The cup of claim 13 in which the spaces allow the foam cup to distort relative to the label to accommodate expansions of the foam cup associated with temperature fluctuations of the foam cup.

15. The cup of claim 1 further comprising a barrier layer between the continuous back surface of the label and the patterned adhesive to protect the label from the ingress of fluid.

16. The cup of claim 15 in which the barrier layer is a varnish.

17. A label-wrapped foam cup comprising

a foam cup having an open end and a closed end joined by a peripheral wall including inner and outer wall surfaces,

the peripheral wall and closed end of the foam cup being made of foam and the foam of the peripheral wall and closed end being arranged in shape for holding liquids,

a label wrapped in a frusto-conical form around the outer wall surface of the foam cup,

printed matter on a front surface of the label,

a patterned adhesive occupying limited portions of a back surface of the label bonding the label to the outer wall surface of the foam cup,

the back surface of the label including remaining portions that are not occupied by the patterned adhesive, and

the patterned adhesive on the back surface of the label being registered with the printing on the front surface of the label.

18. The cup of claim 17 in which the patterned adhesive on the back surface of the label is spaces the label from the from the outer wall surface of the foam cup and supports undulations in the label between the limited portions that are occupied by the patterned adhesive and the remaining portions of the label that are not occupied by the patterned adhesive.

19. The cup of claim 18 in which the label includes a margin between the patterned adhesive and the periphery of the label having an average width of at least one-half millimeter.

20. The cup of claim 19 in which the margin has an average width less than two millimeters.

21. The cup of claim 17 in which the patterned adhesive includes a first portion that bonds the label to the foam cup and a second portion that bonds the label to itself.

22. The cup of claim 21 in which the first portion of the patterned adhesive includes the discontinuous deposits of adhesive that bond the label to the foam cup and the second portion of the patterned adhesive includes a different arrangement of adhesive.
