Abstract

The present invention is directed towards an austenitic, stainless steel series 300 alloy having improved biocompatible characteristics. The modified stainless steel alloy consists essentially of, in weight percent, about C Mn Si P S ≦0.030 ≦2.00 ≦0.750 ≦0.023 ≦0.010 Cr Mo Ni Fe “X” 8.5-11.5 0.0-6.25 6.5-7.5 46.185-74.000 5.0-10.0 whereby variable “X” could be comprised from a group consisting of Gold, Osmium, Palladium, Platinum, Rhenium, Tantalum, or Tungsten. The alloy provides a unique combination of strength, ductility, corrosion resistance, and other mechanical properties which also has improved biocompatible characteristics.

Claims (39)

1. A medical implant, comprising:

A member formed of a non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy comprising

chromium,

nickel,

2.0 weight percent or greater of platinum and

iron;

wherein a total amount of chromium and nickel in the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy is less than or equal to 19 weight percent; and

wherein the medical implant is an endoprosthesis comprising a member capable of supporting a body passageway, the member being formed of the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy.

2. The medical implant of claim 1 , wherein the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy comprises between 2.0 weight percent and 10.0 weight percent of platinum.

3. The medical implant of claim 1 , wherein the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy comprises between 4.0 weight percent and 5.0 weight percent of platinum.

4. The medical implant of claim 1 , wherein the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy comprises 8.5 weight percent or greater of chromium.

5. The medical implant of claim 1 , wherein the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy comprises less than 3 weight percent molybdenum.

6. The medical implant of claim 1 , wherein the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy comprises up to 2.0 weight percent manganese.

7. The medical implant of claim 1 , wherein the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy comprises between about 46 weight percent and 74 weight percent iron.

8. The medical implant of claim 1 , wherein the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy comprises between 6.5 weight percent and 7.5 weight percent nickel.

9. The medical implant of claim 1 , wherein the member consists essentially of the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy.

10. A medical implant, comprising:

A member formed of a non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy comprising

chromium,

less than or equal to 7.5 weight percent of nickel,

2.0 weight percent or greater of platinum and

about 46 weight percent or greater of iron;

wherein the medical implant is a stent.

11. The medical implant of claim 10 , wherein the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy comprises between 2.0 weight percent and 10.0 weight percent of platinum.

12. The medical implant of claim 10 , wherein the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy comprises greater than 8.5 weight percent chromium.

13. The medical implant of claim 10 , wherein the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy comprises between about 46 weight percent and 74 weight percent iron.

14. The medical implant of claim 10 , wherein the medical implant is an endoprosthesis comprising a member capable of supporting a body passageway, the member being formed of the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy.

15. The medical implant of claim 10 , wherein a total amount of chromium and nickel in the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy is less than or equal to 19 weight percent.

16. The medical implant of claim 10 , wherein the non-magnetic, austenitic steel alloy comprises less than or equal to 11.5 weight percent chromium.

17. A medical implant, comprising a member consisting essentially of an alloy comprising:

about 46 weight percent or greater of iron; and

between 2.0 weight percent and 10.0 weight percent of a first element selected from the group consisting of palladium and platinum;

with the proviso that the alloy includes:

less than or equal to 7.5 weight percent of nickel; and

less than or equal to 11.5 weight percent chromium;

wherein the medical implant is an endoprosthesis; and

wherein the member is capable of supporting a body passageway.

18. The medical implant of claim 17 , wherein the alloy comprises between 4.0 weight percent and 5.0 weight percent of the first element.

19. The medical implant of claim 17 , wherein the alloy further comprises manganese.
