Abstract

The present invention discloses pharmaceutical compositions containing 1-methyl-D-tryptophan and its utility to enhance rejection of tumor or virus-infected cells or to delay the progression of tumor growth. The present invention shows that pharmaceutical compositions containing 1-methyl-D-tryptophan enhance the efficacy of alternative antitumor or antiviral treatments such as chemotherapy, vaccination or cytokine therapy.

Claims (16)

1. A pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of cancer or an infection, the composition consisting of a therapeutically effective amount of 1-methyl-D-tryptophan and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, wherein the pharmaceutical composition is formulated for oral delivery in a tablet or capsule.

2. A pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of cancer or an infection, the composition consisting of (a): 1-methyl-D-tryptophan; (b) at least one therapeutic agent selected from the group consisting of a chemotherapeutic agent, an antimicrobial agent, an antiviral agent, wherein said therapeutic agent does not include 1-methyl-L-tryptophan and (c) a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

3. The composition of claim 2 , wherein the chemotherapeutic agent is an antineoplastic agent.

4. The composition of claim 3 , wherein the antineoplastic chemotherapeutic agent is selected from the group consisting of: cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, flurouracil, doxorubicin, vincristine, ifosfamide, cisplatin, gemcytabine, busulfant, adriamycin, mitomycin, and cytotoxan.

5. The composition of claim 2 , wherein the antiviral agent is selected from the group consisting of: AZT, ddI and ddC.

6. The composition of claim 1 or 2 , wherein the pharmaceutically acceptable carrier is selected from the group consisting of one or more diluents, buffers, binders, disintegrants, surface active agents, thickeners, lubricants, and preservatives.

7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is formulated for controlled or sustained release.

8. A pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of cancer or an infection, the composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of 1-methyl-D-tryptophan, but not 1-methyl-L-tryptophan, in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, wherein the pharmaceutical composition is formulated for oral delivery as a tablet or capsule.

9. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 8 , further comprising at least one additional therapeutic agent, wherein the at least one additional therapeutic agent does not include 1-methyl-L-tryptophan.

10. The composition of claim 9 , wherein the therapeutic agent is selected from the group consisting of: a chemotherapeutic agent, an antibiotic, an antimicrobial agent, an antiviral agent.

11. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the chemotherapeutic agent is an antineoplastic agent.

12. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the antineoplastic chemotherapeutic agent is selected from the group consisting of: cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, fluorouracil, doxorubicin, vincristine, ifosfamide, cisplatin, gemcytabine, busulfan, ara-C, adriamycin, mitomycin, and cytotoxan.

13. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the antiviral agent is selected from the group consisting of AZT, ddI, and ddC.

14. The composition of claim 8 , further comprising one or more diluents, buffers, binders, disintegrants, surface active agents, thickeners, lubricants, or preservatives.

15. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 8 , wherein the composition is formulated for a controlled or sustained release.

16. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of 1-methyl-D-tryptophan, wherein said 1-methyl-D-tryptophan is not contained within a racemate, wherein the composition is formulated for oral delivery in a tablet or capsule.
