Abstract

Methods and apparatuses for performing biometric determinations using optical spectroscopy of tissue. The biometric determinations that are disclosed include determination or verifications of identity, estimation of age, estimation of sex, determination of sample liveness and sample authenticity. The apparatuses disclosed are based upon discrete light sources such as light emitting diodes, laser diodes, vertical cavity surface emitting lasers, and broadband sources with multiple narrow-band optical filters. The multiple light sources are encoded in a manner that the tissue response for each source can be efficiently measured. The light sources are spaced at multiple distances from a detector to contribute differing information to the biometric determination task as do light sources with different wavelength characteristics. Apparatuses are disclosed that incorporate a spectral biometric sensor with a personal electronic device such as cellular telephones, personal digital assistants, wristwatches, electronic fobs for the purpose of providing secure biometric access to protected property.

Claims (33)

1. A biometric identification method comprising:

collecting light from a purported skin site with a light detector embodied in a personal device;

directing light towards the purported skin site from an illumination source embodied in the personal device;

detecting linear effects of the collected light to generate a tissue spectrum from the detected linear effects to perform a biometric determination that identifies a sole individual from the tissue spectrum; and

authorizing access to protected property in accordance with the determination that identifies the sole individual.

2. The biometric identification method of claim 1 , wherein emitting light from the illumination source comprises emitting light in a plurality of wavelengths from a plurality of illumination sources.

3. The biometric identification method of claim 1 , wherein:

processing spectral wavelengths comprises:

comparing the spectral wavelengths to a collection of stored spectral wavelengths; and

determining whether the spectral wavelengths match at least one of the collection of stored spectral wavelengths; and

authorizing access to the protected property comprises authorizing access to the protected property based on a determination that the spectral wavelengths match at least one of the collection of stored spectral wavelengths.

4. The biometric identification method of claim 1 , wherein the personal device comprises an electronic fob.

5. The biometric identification method of claim 1 , wherein the personal device comprises a cellular telephone.

6. The biometric identification method of claim 1 , wherein the personal device comprises a wristwatch.

7. The biometric identification method of claim 1 , wherein the personal device comprises a smart card.

8. The biometric identification method of claim 1 , wherein the personal device comprises a firearm.

9. The biometric identification method of claim 1 , wherein the method includes generating, from the collected light, an optical tissue spectrum that includes the spectral wavelengths, wherein the spectral wavelengths contain spectral features that are unique to the sole individual.

10. A biometric identification system, comprising:

a light detector embodied in a personal device, and configured to collect light from a purported skin site;

an illumination sources embodied in the personal device, and configured to direct light towards the purported skin site;

a computational unit having instructions for detecting linear effects of the collected light to generate a tissue spectrum from the detected linear effects to perform a biometric determination that identifies a sole individual from the tissue spectrum and for authorizing access to protected property in accordance with the determination that identifies the sole individual.

11. The biometric identification system of claim 10 , wherein the illumination source comprises a plurality of illumination sources embodied in the personal device and configured to emit light in a plurality of wavelengths.

12. The biometric identification system of claim 10 , wherein:

the instructions for processing spectral wavelengths of the collected light comprise:

instructions for comparing the spectral wavelengths to a collection of stored spectral wavelengths; and

instructions for determining whether the spectral wavelengths match at least one of the collection of stored spectral wavelengths; and

the instructions for authorizing access to the protected property comprise instructions for authorizing access to the protected property based on a determination that the spectral wavelengths match at least one of the collection of stored spectral wavelengths.

13. The biometric identification system of claim 10 , wherein the personal device comprises an electronic fob.

14. The biometric identification system of claim 10 , wherein the personal device comprises a cellular telephone.

15. The biometric identification system of claim 10 , wherein the personal device comprises a wristwatch.

16. The biometric identification system of claim 10 , wherein the personal device comprises a smart card.

17. The biometric identification system of claim 10 , wherein the personal device comprises a firearm.

18. The biometric identification system of claim 10 , wherein the computational unit includes instructions for generating, from the collected light, an optical tissue spectrum that includes the spectral wavelengths, wherein the spectral wavelengths contain spectral features that are unique to the sole individual.
