Abstract

A method of managing gain tilt in an optical transmission segment including providing an optical transmission segment having a plurality of fiber optic cable spans and a plurality of repeaters coupled to the fiber optic cable spans. Gain tilt in the optical transmission segment is monitored. If negative gain tilt is accumulated at a repeater location in the transmission segment, the repeater at the repeater location is replaced with a higher gain repeater having a higher nominal gain value than the nominal gain value of the repeater being replaced.

Claims (10)

1. A method of managing gain tilt in an optical transmission segment, said method comprising:

providing an optical transmission segment comprising a plurality of fiber optic cable spans and a plurality of repeaters coupled to said fiber optic cable spans;

monitoring gain tilt in said optical transmission segment; and

if negative gain tilt is accumulated at a location of a repeater of said plurality of repeaters in said transmission segment, managing said negative gain tilt by replacing said repeater at said repeater location with a higher gain repeater having a higher nominal gain value than said nominal gain value of said repeater being replaced to bring a net gain of said system toward zero.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising: if positive gain tilt is accumulated, adding at least one line build out (LBO) to at least one of said cable spans.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

if positive gain tilt is accumulated at a repeater location in said transmission segment, replacing said repeater at said repeater location with a lower gain repeater having a lower nominal gain value than said nominal gain value of said repeater being replaced.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said optical fiber spans includes a plurality of fibers spliced together.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of repeaters have essentially the same spacing.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said plurality of repeaters comprises an erbium doped fiber amplifier.
