Abstract

Methods and systems for securely distributing software in a subscription-based environment are provided. A Game Security Facility (“GSF”) associated with a game server manages secure communications with game clients. A subscriber is registered in a manner that includes a unique identifier of the machine upon which the subscription data will reside. Encryption keys are generated for the registered subscriber and encrypted subscription data is exchanged, thus preventing unauthorized copying to another machine or unauthorized use by a third party. The subscriber is re-registered, and new encryption keys are generated. Access is enabled to the previously exchanged encrypted subscription data without causing the previously exchanged data to be re-downloaded.

Claims (39)

1. A method in a computer system for providing access to previously downloaded secure data comprising:

registering a subscriber at the computer system by receiving a public key portion of a first asymmetric encryption key pair;

establishing a session at the computer system with the registered subscriber, including generating a first symmetric session key;

exchanging encrypted subscription data with a client computer system from the computer system using a combination of the first symmetric session key and the public key portion of the first asymmetric encryption key pair;

re-registering the subscriber at the computer system;

establishing a second session at the computer system with the re-registered subscriber, including generating a second symmetric session key; and

enabling decryption of the previously exchanged encrypted subscription data without causing the previously exchanged encrypted subscription data to be re-downloaded by forwarding a list of previously used one-time session keys to the client computer system, wherein the list includes at least the first symmetric session key, and wherein the list is encrypted using a public key portion of a second asymmetric encryption key pair.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subscription data comprises computer game data.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computer system device comprises a network card.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the client computer system comprises a computer game console.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computer system comprises a computer game environment.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subscription data pertains to a Massive Multiplayer Role Playing Game.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subscription data comprises information regarding advertisement downloading events.

8. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium containing instructions for execution by a computing device, the instructions comprising:

instructions to register a subscriber by receiving a public key portion of a first asymmetric encryption key pair;

instructions to establish a session with the registered subscriber, including generating a first symmetric session key;

instructions to exchange encrypted subscription data with a client computer system using a combination of the first symmetric session key and the public key portion of the first asymmetric encryption key pair;

instructions to re-register the subscriber using a public key portion of a second asymmetric encryption key pair;

instructions to establish a second session with the re-registered subscriber, including generating a second symmetric session key; and

instructions to enable decryption of the previously exchanged encrypted subscription data without causing the previously exchanged data to be re-downloaded by forwarding a list of previously used one-time session keys to the client computer system, wherein the list includes at least the first symmetric session key, and wherein the list is encrypted using the public key portion of the second asymmetric encryption key pair.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the subscription data comprises computer game data.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the computing device comprises a network card.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the client computer system comprises a computer game console.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the computing device comprises a computer game environment.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the subscription data pertains to a Massive Multiplayer Role Playing Game.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the subscription data comprises information regarding advertisement downloading events.

15. A system comprising:

a memory; and

a processor operably connected to the memory, wherein the processor is configured to:

register a subscriber by receiving a public key portion of a first asymmetric encryption key pair;

establish a session with the registered subscriber, including generating a first symmetric session key and exchanging encrypted subscription data with a client computer system using a combination of the first symmetric session key and the public key portion of the first asymmetric encryption key pair;

re-register the subscriber in accordance with a public key portion of a second asymmetric encryption key pair;

establish a second session with the re-registered subscriber, including generating a second symmetric session key; and

enable decryption of the previously exchanged encrypted subscription data without causing the previously exchanged data to be re-downloaded by forwarding a list of previously used one-time session keys to the client computer system, wherein the list includes at least the first symmetric session key, and wherein the list is encrypted using the public key portion of the second asymmetric encryption key pair.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the subscription data comprises computer game data.

17. The system of claim 15 , further comprising a network card.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the client computer system comprises a computer game console.

19. The system of claim 15 , wherein the system comprises a computer game environment.

20. The system of claim 15 , wherein the subscription data pertains to a Massive Multiplayer Role Playing Game.
