Abstract

Methods and systems of patient treatment are disclosed. The methods and systems include use of medical device informatics to modify and validate therapies and drugs used in those therapies. In certain embodiments, a medical device, such as a medical infusion pump, interfaces with a server to administer the patient treatments. In one aspect, a medical device server is disclosed. The medical device server includes a memory configured to store patient status information and command information and a programmable circuit operatively connected to the memory. The programmable circuit is configured to execute program instructions to receive patient status information from a first medical device, the patient status information related to a patient and determine the need for treatment of the patient. The programmable circuit is also configured to execute program instructions to transmit a command to a second medical device configured to provide the treatment.

Claims (36)

1 . A medical device server comprising:

a memory configured to store patient status information and command information;

a programmable circuit operatively connected to the memory, the programmable circuit configured to execute program instructions to:

receive patient status information from a first medical device, the patient status information related to a patient;

determine the need for treatment of the patient; and

transmit a command to a second medical device configured to provide the treatment.

2 . The medical device server of claim 1 , wherein transmitting a command occurs upon affirming that treatment is needed.

3 . The medical device server of claim 2 , wherein affirming that treatment is needed comprises receiving authorization from a caregiver to proceed with the treatment determined by the medical device server.

4 . The medical device server of claim 1 , wherein transmitting a command occurs upon determining the need for treatment of the patient by the server.

5 . The medical device server of claim 1 , wherein the first medical device is a patient monitor.

6 . The medical device server of claim 1 , wherein the second medical device is a medical infusion pump.

7 . The medical device server of claim 1 , wherein transmitting a command comprises transmitting a set of pump parameters to a medical infusion pump.

8 . The medical device server of claim 1 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to transmit a command to a third medical device.

9 . The medical device server of claim 1 , wherein programming the second medical device comprises programming the second medical device to display an advisory message.

10 . A method of programming a medical device, the method comprising:

receiving patient status information from a first medical device, the patient status infomation related to a patient;

determining, by a medical device server, the need for treatment of the patient; and

programming a second medical device capable of applying the treatment to the patient.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein programming the second medical device occurs upon affirming that treatment is needed.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein affirming that treatment is needed comprises receiving authorization from a caregiver to proceed with the treatment determined by the medical device server.

13 . The method of claim 10 , wherein transmitting a command occurs upon determining the need for treatment of the patient by the server.

14 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the first medical device is a patient monitor.

15 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the second medical device is a medical infusion pump.

16 . The method of claim 10 , wherein transmitting a command comprises transmitting a set of pump parameters to a medical infusion pump.

17 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising transmitting a command to a third medical device.

18 . The method of claim 10 , wherein programming the second medical device comprises programming the second medical device to display an advisory message.

19 . A medical device network comprising:

a plurality of medical devices;

a medical device server operatively connected to the plurality of medical devices, the medical device server comprising:

a memory configured to store patient status information and command information;

a programmable circuit operatively connected to the memory, the programmable circuit configured to execute program instructions to:

receive patient status information from a first medical device from among the plurality of medical devices;

determine the need for treatment of the patient; and

upon affirming that treatment is needed, transmit a command to a second medical device from among the plurality of medical devices, the second medical device configured to provide the treatment.

20 . The medical device network of claim 19 , wherein programming the second medical device occurs upon affirming that treatment is needed.

21 . The medical device network of claim 20 , wherein affirming that treatment is needed comprises receiving authorization from a caregiver to proceed with the treatment determined by the medical device server.
