Abstract

Methods and systems of patient treatment are disclosed. The methods and systems include use of medical device informatics to modify and validate therapies and drugs used in those therapies. In certain embodiments, a medical device, such as a medical infusion pump, interfaces with a server to administer the patient treatments. In one aspect, a method of determining the on-line status of a medical device is disclosed. The method includes expecting communication from the medical device within a predetermined period, and determining whether a message has been received from the medical device within the predetermined period. The method further includes establishing an on-line status for the medical device based on the determining step.

Claims (35)

1 . A method of determining the on-line status of a medical device, the method comprising:

expecting communication from the medical device within a predetermined period;

determining whether a message has been received from the medical device within the predetermined period;

establishing an on-line status for the medical device based on the determining step.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein, if a message has been received within the predetermined period, establishing an on-line status for the medical device comprises establishing that the medical device is on-line.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein, if a message has not been received within the predetermined period, establishing an on-line status for the medical device comprises establishing that the medical device is off-line.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising updating data records in a medical device server using information received in the message.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising updating data output from a medical device server based on information received in the message.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the message includes data received by a server from the medical device.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the message includes medical device status information.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising updating a display on a workstation based on the on-line status of the medical device.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the workstation is configured to display telemetry data received by the medical device server and related to the medical device.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the medical device is a medical infusion pump.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the message includes receiving telemetry data from the medical device.

12 . A medical device server comprising:

a memory configured to store on-line status information regarding a medical device;

a programmable circuit operatively connected to the memory, the programmable circuit configured to execute program instructions to:

expect communication from the medical device within a predetermined period;

determine whether a message has been received from the medical device within the predetermined period;

establish an on-line status for the medical device based on the determining step.

13 . The medical device server of claim 12 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to, if a message has been received within the predetermined period, establish that the medical device is on-line.

14 . The medical device server of claim 12 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to, if a message has not been received within the predetermined period, establish that the medical device is off-line.

15 . The medical device server of claim 12 , wherein the message includes medical device status information.

16 . The medical device server of claim 12 , further comprising updating a display on a workstation based on the on-line status of the medical device.

17 . The medical device server of claim 16 , wherein the workstation is configured to display telemetry data received by the medical device server and related to the medical device.

18 . The medical device server of claim 12 , wherein the medical device is a medical infusion pump.

19 . The medical device server of claim 12 , wherein receiving the message includes receiving telemetry data from the medical device.

20 . The medical device server of claim 12 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to update data records in a medical device server using information received in the message.

21 . The medical device server of claim 12 , wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to update data output from a medical device server based on information received in the message.

22 . A method of communicating an on-line status of a medical device, the method comprising:

initiating communication with a medical device server at a first time; and

establishing an on-line status by initiating communication with the medical device server at a second time, the second time within a predetermined period from the first time.

23 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the medical device is a medical infusion pump.

24 . The method of claim 22 , further comprising, upon initiating communication with the medical device server, communicating event log data to the medical device server.

25 . The method of claim 22 , further comprising, upon initiating communication with the medical device server, communicating medical device status information to the medical device server.
