Abstract

A method of printing includes the steps of rendering continuous tone (“contone”) data to a pixel level and subsequently compressing the contone data in a personal computer. The bi-level data is rendered to a dot level and subsequently compressed in said personal computer. The method also includes the steps of transmitting the contone and bi-level data and decompressing the contone data and foreground bi-level data in parallel in a printer controller. The contone data is halftoned to bi-level color data. The foreground bi-level data is composited over the bi-level color data to create composited bi-level color image data. The steps of halftoning and compositing are performed in parallel. The method further includes the step of printing the composited bi-level color image data.

Claims (13)

1. A method of printing using a personal computer being connected to a printer comprising the steps of:

rendering contone data to a pixel level and subsequently compressing the contone data in said personal computer;

rendering bi-level data to a dot level and subsequently compressing the bi-level data in said personal computer;

transmitting the contone data and the bi-level data from said personal computer to a printer;

decompressing the contone data and foreground bi-level data in parallel in a printer controller;

halftoning the contone data to bi-level color data and compositing the foreground bi-level data over the bi-level color data to create composited bi-level color image data, wherein the steps of halftoning and compositing are performed in parallel; and

printing the composited bi-level color image data.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of printing includes printing the data with a pagewidth printhead of said printer having a plurality of printhead integrated circuits.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of printing includes transferring the composited bi-level color image data to the printhead at a constant rate.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the constant rate includes a data rate in excess of 50 Mbytes per second.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of decompressing the contone data and the foreground bi-level data occurs in real time with the step of printing the composited bi-level color image data.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the foreground bi-level data includes data selected from a group consisting of: foreground bi-level black data, and foreground bi-level CMYK data.

7. The method of claim 1 , having the steps of loading the compressed page data into a compressed page buffer, loading the contone data into a contone color buffer, loading the foreground bi-level data into a bi-level K buffer, and loading the composited bi-level color image data into a bi-level color buffer.
