Abstract

A printhead is provided for an inkjet printer. The printhead includes a wafer assembly supporting rows of ink ejection nozzles. Each nozzle includes a nozzle structure defining a nozzle chamber in fluid communication with an ink ejection port. A cantilevered thermal actuator terminates in a free end over an ink supply channel. The thermal actuator includes a serpentine heater layer connected to a CMOS drive circuitry layer of the wafer assembly. The CMOS drive circuitry layer is configured to actuate the thermal actuator and reciprocate the actuator to eject ink in the nozzle chamber out through the ink ejection port.

Claims (13)

1. A printhead for an inkjet printer, the printhead comprising a wafer assembly supporting rows of ink ejection nozzles, each nozzle comprising:

a nozzle structure defining a nozzle chamber in fluid communication with an ink ejection port; and

a cantilevered thermal actuator which terminates in a free end over an ink supply channel, the thermal actuator comprising a serpentine heater layer connected to a CMOS drive circuitry layer of the wafer assembly, the CMOS drive circuitry layer configured to actuate the thermal actuator and reciprocate the actuator to eject ink in the nozzle chamber out through the ink ejection port.

2. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the wafer assembly includes:

a silicon wafer;

the CMOS drive circuitry layer formed on the wafer; and

a protective passivation layer deposited on the CMOS drive circuitry layer.

3. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the actuator includes two polytetrafluroethylene (PTFE) layers between which the heater layer is sandwiched.

4. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the thermal actuator is configured so that its free end bends towards the ink ejection port upon heating of the heater layer.

5. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the nozzle rows are arranged in adjacent pairs, with the actuators of the rows forming each pair extending toward each other to terminate in the free ends.

6. A printhead as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the nozzle rows of each pair are staggered with respect to each other.

7. A printhead as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the rows of each pair share a common wall.

8. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the serpentine heater layer includes two opposed serpentine portions.
