Abstract

Various “contactless” bearing mechanisms including hydrodynamic, hydrostatic, and magnetic bearings are provided for a rotary pump as alternatives to mechanical contact bearings. These design features may be combined. In one embodiment, the pump apparatus includes a rotor having a bore, a ring-shaped upper rotor bearing magnet, and a ring-shaped lower rotor bearing magnet. The bearing magnets are concentric with the bore. The lack of mechanical contact bearings enables longer life pump operation and less damage to working fluids such as blood.

Claims (48)

1. A pump apparatus comprising:

a housing;

a spindle extending from said housing;

a rotor having a through-bore through which said spindle extends;

an axial magnetic bearing comprising:

a ring-shaped upper rotor bearing magnet concentric with the bore;

a ring-shaped lower rotor bearing magnet concentric with the bore;

a ring-shaped upper spindle bearing magnet;

a ring-shaped lower spindle bearing magnet; and,

a hydrodynamic thrust bearing comprised of a plurality of discrete wedge-shaped surfaces disposed between said rotor and said housing.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein magnetic vectors of the upper and lower rotor magnets oppose each other.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein magnetic vectors of the upper and lower rotor magnets have a same direction.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said plurality of discrete wedge-shaped surfaces are disposed on said rotor.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the rotor has a grooved bore.

6. A pump apparatus comprising:

a housing;

a spindle disposed inside said housing;

a rotor having a hollow cylindrical opening to receive said spindle;

said rotor rotatable around said spindle;

an axial magnetic bearing having rotor magnets and spindle magnets;

said rotor magnets including an upper and lower ring-shaped magnet;

said spindle magnets including an upper and lower ring-shaped magnet;

a hydrodynamic thrust bearing comprised of a plurality of individual wedge-shaped surfaces disposed between said rotor and said housing.

7. An apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein a magnetic vector of said upper rotor magnet is in the same direction as the magnetic vector of said lower rotor magnet.

8. An apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein a magnetic vector of said upper rotor magnet is in the opposite direction of the magnetic vector of said lower rotor magnet.

9. An apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein said plurality of individual wedge-shaped surfaces are disposed on said rotor.

10. An apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein said rotor has a grooved bore.

11. A pump apparatus comprising:

a housing;

a spindle extending up from said housing;

a rotor having a hollow opening extending through a center of said rotor receiving said spindle;

an axial magnetic bearing having at least two rotor magnets and at least two spindle magnets;

said at least two rotor magnets comprised of one upper and one lower ring-shaped rotor magnet;

said at least two spindle magnets comprised of one upper and one lower ring-shaped spindle magnet;

a hydrodynamic thrust bearing comprised of a plurality of individual wedge-shaped surfaces disposed between said rotor and said housing.

12. An apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein a magnetic vector of said one upper ring-shaped rotor magnet is in the same direction as a magnetic vector of said one lower ring-shaped rotor magnet.

13. An apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein a magnetic vector of said one upper ring-shaped rotor magnet is in the opposite direction of a magnetic vector of said one lower ring-shaped rotor magnet.

14. An apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein said plurality of individual wedge-shaped surfaces are disposed on said rotor.

15. An apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein said rotor has a grooved bore.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said ring-shaped upper and ring-shaped lower rotor magnets are disposed axially above and below said ring-shaped upper and ring-shaped lower spindle magnets, respectively.

17. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said ring-shaped upper spindle magnet is disposed at a position concentric on an axis of said pump that is above a position of said ring-shaped upper rotor magnet concentric on said axis of said pump.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein said ring-shaped lower spindle magnet is disposed at a position concentric on an axis of said pump that is below a position of said ring-shaped lower rotor magnet concentric on said axis of said pump.

19. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein said upper and lower ring-shaped rotor magnets are disposed axially above and below said upper and lower ring-shaped spindle magnets, respectively.

20. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein said upper ring-shaped rotor magnet is disposed axially upwardly relative to a position of said upper ring-shaped spindle magnet.

21. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein said lower ring-shaped rotor magnet is disposed axially downwardly relative to a position of said lower ring-shaped spindle magnet.

22. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein said one upper and one lower ring-shaped rotor magnets are disposed axially above and below said one upper and one lower ring-shaped spindle magnets, respectively.

23. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein said one upper ring-shaped rotor magnet is disposed axially upwardly relative to a position of said one upper ring-shaped spindle magnet.

24. The apparatus of claim 23 , wherein said one lower ring-shaped rotor magnet is disposed axially downwardly relative to a position of said one lower ring-shaped spindle magnet.
