Abstract

Removable cardiac implants, applicators for inserting, repositioning and/or removing them, and methods of using them are described. In particular, removable or repositionable ventricular partitioning devices are described. Systems including removable implants and applicators for inserting and/or removing them are also described.

Claims (36)

1. A method of deploying a ventricular partitioning device comprising:

advancing a ventricular partitioning device having a membrane into a patient's left ventricle chamber in a contracted configuration;

expanding the partitioning device into a deployed configuration at a first left ventricle location;

at least partially collapsing the partitioning device into the contracted configuration;

withdrawing the partitioning device from the first left ventricle location; and

repositioning the partitioning device within the left ventricle and expanding the partitioning device into the deployed configuration at a second left ventricle location so that the partitioning device partitions the left ventricle chamber into a main productive portion of the left ventricular chamber and a secondary, non-productive portion of the left ventricular chamber.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising removing the partitioning device from the patient.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of expanding the partitioning device comprises expanding a frame connected to the membrane.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of expanding the partitioning device comprises allowing a frame connected to the membrane to self-expand.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of withdrawing the partitioning device comprises pulling the device into a retrieval catheter.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising securing the ventricular partitioning device to the first left ventricle location.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising disengaging the ventricular partitioning device from the left ventricle in the first location.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of at least partially collapsing the partitioning device into the contracted position comprises pulling on at least one strand connected to the partitioning device.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of at least partially collapsing the partitioning device into the contracted position comprises drawing a collapse sheath at least partially over the partitioning device.

10. A method of deploying a ventricular partitioning device comprising:

advancing a ventricular partitioning device having a membrane into a patient's left ventricle chamber in a contracted configuration;

expanding the partitioning device into a deployed configuration at a first left ventricle location;

pulling on a strand in communication with the partitioning device to at least partially collapse the partitioning device into the contracted configuration after it has been expanded;

retrieving the partitioning device into a retrieval catheter; and

withdrawing the partitioning device from the first left ventricle location.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the step of pulling comprises pulling on an expansive strand extending from the periphery of the membrane.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the step of pulling on the stand in communication with the partitioning device comprises pulling on a retrieval wire at least partially surrounding the expanded membrane.

13. A method of deploying a ventricular partitioning device comprising:

advancing a ventricular partitioning device having a membrane into a patient's left ventricle chamber in a contracted configuration;

deploying the partitioning device to self-expand into a deployed configuration at a first left ventricle location;

at least partially collapsing the partitioning device into the contracted configuration;

repositioning the partitioning device within the left ventricle; and

deploying the partitioning device to self-expand into a deployed configuration at a second left ventricle location so that the partitioning device partitions the left ventricle chamber into a main productive portion of the left ventricular chamber and a secondary, non-productive portion of the left ventricular chamber.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the deploying steps further comprise expanding an inflatable element to assist the expansion of the partitioning device.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising removing the partitioning device from the patient.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein deploying the partitioning device comprises expanding a frame connected to the membrane.

17. The method or claim 13 , wherein repositioning the partitioning device comprises pulling the device into a retrieval catheter.

18. The method of claim 13 further comprising securing the ventricular partitioning device to the first left ventricle location.

19. The method of claim 13 further comprising disengaging the ventricular partitioning device from the left ventricle in the first location.

20. The method of claim 13 , wherein at least partially collapsing the partitioning device into the contracted position comprises pulling on at least one strand extending around the periphery of the partitioning device.

21. The method of claim 13 , wherein at least partially collapsing the partitioning device into the contracted position comprises drawing a collapse sheath at least partially over the partitioning device.
