Abstract

A method for disposing of carbon dioxide is provided. According to the invention, CO 2 is dissolved in seawater and the salinity of the seawater is increased to produce CO 2 -containing brine. The CO 2 -containing brine is denser than the seawater from which it is made. Therefore, when it is released into the ocean, the CO 2 -containing brine sinks to depth and sequesters the carbon dioxide. The brine may be produced by forming CO 2 hydrate, which extracts fresh water from the seawater. Alternatively, the brine may be produced by forming water ice from the seawater and injecting CO 2 into the seawater either before or, more preferably, after the water ice has been formed.

Claims (17)

1. A method for disposing of CO 2 , comprising:

obtaining CO 2 -containing brine having increased salinity, and hence increased density, as compared to seawater and having CO 2 dissolved therein; and

releasing the CO 2 -containing brine into an open body of seawater as a bolus, such that the CO 2 -containing brine sinks to a depth to sequester and dispose of said CO 2 .

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said obtaining CO 2 -containing brine comprises obtaining residual brine having increased salinity, and hence increased density, as compared to seawater.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said residual brine is obtained by making it.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein said residual brine is made using an extraction medium to extract water molecules from seawater.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the CO 2 -containing brine is made by dissolving CO 2 into seawater and extracting water molecules from the seawater by forming CO 2 hydrate, wherein the CO 2 hydrate comprises the extraction medium and the residual brine is CO 2 -laden upon being made.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the CO 2 -containing brine is made by dissolving CO 2 into a solvent and extracting water molecules from the solvent by forming water ice, which water ice comprises the extraction medium.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the CO 2 -containing brine is made by first forming the residual brine, which residual brine comprises the solvent, by forming the water ice and then dissolving CO 2 into the residual brine.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the CO 2 -containing brine is made by first dissolving CO 2 into seawater, which seawater comprises the solvent, and then forming the water ice from the CO 2 -containing seawater such that the residual brine is CO 2 -laden upon being made.

9. The method of claim 4 , further comprising obtaining fresh water from the extraction medium.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the fresh water obtained from the extraction medium is potable.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising subjecting the fresh water obtained from the extraction medium to non-hydrate-based desalination.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the non-hydrate-based desalination comprises reverse osmosis.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the non-hydrate-based desalination comprises ion exchange.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the non-hydrate-based desalination comprises distillation.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein said releasing comprises exhausting the CO 2 -containing brine downwardly through a downwardly extending conduit.
