Abstract

A method and apparatus for a seismic cable is described. The apparatus includes a plurality of cable segments comprising at least a first cable segment and a second cable segment coupled by a connector. The connector comprises a cylindrical body having a first diameter, a portion of the body having a second diameter that is smaller than the first diameter and centrally positioned between opposing ends of the body, a first coupling section having a terminating end of the first cable segment anchored therein, and a second coupling section having a terminating end of the second cable segment anchored therein, at least a portion of the first and second coupling sections being rotatably coupled to respective ends of the body, wherein the connector isolates the first cable segment from the second cable segment. A method of deployment and retrieval of the seismic cable is also described.

Claims (49)

1. A seismic cable, comprising:

a plurality of cable segments comprising at least a first cable segment and a second cable segment coupled by a connector, the connector comprising:

a cylindrical body having a first diameter, a portion of the body having a second diameter that is smaller than the first diameter and centrally positioned between opposing ends of the body;

a first coupling section comprising a hollow body having a terminating end of the first cable segment anchored therein; and

a second coupling section comprising a hollow body having a terminating end of the second cable segment anchored therein, at least a portion of the first and second coupling sections being rotatably coupled to respective ends of the body, wherein the connector electrically isolates the first cable segment from the second cable segment.

2. The seismic cable of claim 1 , wherein the body further comprises:

recesses extending partially into the body at opposing ends thereof.

3. The seismic cable of claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of the first and second coupling sections are coupled within respective recesses of the body.

4. The seismic cable of claim 1 , wherein each cable segment of the plurality of cable segments further comprises:

a ball coupled to the terminating ends thereof.

5. The seismic cable of claim 4 , wherein the first and second coupling sections form a socket when coupled with the body, the socket being configured to retain the ball and allow rotational movement of the ball.

6. The seismic cable of claim 4 , wherein the ball includes a flattened portion around a circumference thereof.

7. The seismic cable of claim 1 , wherein the connector is coated with an insulative material, and wherein each cable segment is rotatable relative to each coupling section.

8. The seismic cable of claim 1 , wherein the first and second coupling sections further comprise:

a tool interface which includes two holes formed therein that are spaced apart at 180°.

9. The seismic cable of claim 1 , further comprising:

a clamp rotatably disposed on the second diameter of the cylindrical body.

10. The seismic cable of claim 9 , wherein the clamp comprises a first portion and a second portion disposed normal to the first portion.

11. The seismic cable of claim 1 , further comprising a clamp device rotatably coupled to the second diameter.

12. A seismic cable, comprising:

a plurality of cable segments comprising at least a first cable segment and a second cable segment coupled by a connector, the connector comprising:

a cylindrical body having a first diameter, a portion of the body having a second diameter that is smaller than the first diameter and centrally positioned between opposing ends of the body;

a first coupling section comprising a hollow body having a terminating end of the first cable segment anchored therein;

a second coupling section comprising a hollow body having a terminating end of the second cable segment anchored therein, at least a portion of the first and second coupling sections being rotatably coupled to respective ends of the body, wherein the connector electrically isolates the first cable segment from the second cable segment; and

one or more seismic sensor units rotatably coupled to the plurality of connectors, each seismic sensor unit being coupled at the portion of the body having the second diameter.

13. The seismic cable of claim 12 , wherein the body further comprises:

recesses extending partially into the body from opposing ends thereof.

14. The seismic cable of claim 13 , wherein at least a portion of the first and second coupling sections are coupled within respective recesses of the body.

15. The seismic cable of claim 12 , wherein the one or more seismic sensor units are coupled to each of the plurality of connectors by a clamp device.

16. The seismic cable of claim 12 , wherein each cable segment of the plurality of cable segments further comprises:

a ball coupled to the terminating ends thereof.

17. The seismic cable of claim 16 , wherein the first and second coupling sections form a socket, when coupled with the body, configured to retain the ball and allow rotational movement of the ball.

18. The seismic cable of claim 16 , wherein the ball includes a flattened portion around a circumference thereof.

19. The seismic cable of claim 12 , wherein the connector is coated with an insulative material, and wherein each cable segment is rotatable relative to each coupling section.

20. The seismic cable of claim 12 , wherein the first and second coupling sections further comprise:

a tool interface which includes two holes formed therein and spaced apart at 180°.

21. A method for performing a seismic survey in a body of water, comprising:

deploying a length of cable from a vessel into a water column, the cable comprising a plurality of cable segments comprising at least a first cable segment and a second cable segment coupled by a connector, the connector comprising:

a cylindrical body having a first diameter, a portion of the body having a second diameter that is smaller than the first diameter and centrally positioned between opposing ends of the body;

a first coupling section comprising a hollow body having a terminating end of the first cable segment anchored therein;

a second coupling section comprising a hollow body having a terminating end of the second cable segment anchored therein, at least a portion of the first and second coupling sections being rotatably coupled to respective ends of the body, wherein the connector electrically isolates the first cable segment from the second cable segment; and

attaching at least one seismic sensor unit to the connector as the cable is deployed.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein a seismic sensor unit is attached to the connector on each of the plurality of cable segments to form a mainline cable that is at least partially resting on a floor of the water column.

23. The method of claim 22 , further comprising:

initiating a seismic source signal and recording the reflected signals on at least one of the seismic sensor units.

24. The method of claim 23 , further comprising:

retrieving the mainline cable from the water column.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein the retrieval comprises attaching the mainline cable to a cable handler on the vessel.

26. The method of claim 24 , wherein the retrieval comprises pulling the mainline cable from the floor and detaching each of the seismic sensor units from the connector.
