Abstract

A wireless communication device is configured to provide wireless communication to a host device when disposed in a mated position with the host device such that a housing of the wireless communication device extends a distance Lid from a face of the host device. The wireless communication device includes a transceiver, a controller in communication with the transceiver, and a modem in communication with the controller. The wireless communication device also includes a dipole antenna having a dipole effective current axis Ix for a selected wavelength λ in the mated position that is at a distance from the face of the host device that is in the range of about 0.09λ to about 0.25λ.

Claims (18)

1. A wireless communication device configured to provide wireless communication to a host device when disposed in a mated position with the host device such that a housing of the wireless communication device extends a distance Lid from a face of the host device, the wireless communication device comprising:

a transceiver;

a controller in communication with the transceiver;

a modem in communication with the controller; and

a dipole antenna having a dipole effective current axis Ix for a selected wavelength λ in the mated position that is at a distance from the face of the host device that is in the range of about 0.09λ. to about 0.25λ.

2. The wireless communication device of claim 1 , wherein the dipole effective current axis Ix in the mated position is at a distance from the face of the host device that is in the range of about 0.15λ to about 0.25λ.

3. The wireless communication device of claim 1 , wherein the dipole effective current axis Ix in the mated position is at a distance from the face of the host device that is about 0.25λ.

4. The wireless communication device of claim 1 , wherein the dipole antenna is a notch antenna.

5. The wireless communication device of claim 1 , wherein the dipole antenna is a top-loaded dipole antenna.

6. The wireless communication device of claim 5 , wherein the top-loading is disposed in folded configuration.

7. The wireless communication device of claim 5 , further including a meander chock/inductor.

8. A wireless communication device configured to provide wireless communication to a host device when disposed in a mated position with the host device such that a housing of the wireless communication device extends a distance Lid from a face of the host device, the wireless communication device comprising:

transceiver means;

controller means coupled to the transceiver means;

modem means coupled to the controller means; and

means for transmitting and receiving RF signals and having an effective current axis Ix for a selected wavelength λ in the mated position that is at a distance from the face of the host device that is in the range of about 0.09λ to about 0.25λ.

9. The wireless communication device of claim 8 , wherein the effective current axis Ix in the mated position is at a distance from the face of the host device that is in the range of about 0.15λ to about 0.25λ.

10. The wireless communication device of claim 8 , wherein the effective current axis Ix in the mated position is at a distance from the face of the host device that is about 0.25λ.
