Abstract

A network upgrade tool creates an upgrade project designating a source digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM), a target DSLAM, and an upgrade type and determines whether the source DSLAM and target DSLAM are eligible for upgrade based on the upgrade type. At least one new digital subscriber line (DSL) path associated with the target DSLAM is identified when the source DSLAM and target DSLAM are eligible for upgrade. Pre-provisionable elements associated with the at least one new DSL path are identified and the identified pre-provisionable elements are provisioned prior to transition from at least one existing DSL path to the at least one new DSL path. A cutover selection is received that indicates that physical network changes associated with the target DSLAM have been made and non-pre-provisioned elements are provisioned following receipt of the cutover selection.

Claims (109)

1. A computing device-implemented method, comprising:

creating an upgrade project designating a source digital subscriber line access mulitiplexer (DSLAM), a target DSLAM, and an upgrade type;

determining whether the source DSLAM and the target DSLAM are eligible for an upgrade based on the upgrade type;

identifying at least one new digital subscriber line (DSL) path associated with the target DSLAM when the source DSLAM and the target DSLAM are eligible for the upgrade;

identifying pre-provisionable elements associated with the at least one new DSL path;

provisioning the identified pre-provisionable elements prior to transition from at least one existing DSL path to the at least one new DSL path;

receiving a cutover selection indicating that physical network changes associated with the target DSLAM have been made; and

provisioning non-pre-provisioned elements following receipt of the cutover selection.

2. The computing device-implemented method of claim 1 , where the upgrade type comprises one of:

a DSLAM split upgrade;

a DSLAM upgrade; or

a rehome upgrade.

3. The computing device-implemented method of claim 1 , where determining whether the source DSLAM and the target DSLAM are eligible for upgrade further comprises:

determining that the target DSLAM fails to include existing customers that conflict with customers transferred from the source DSLAM; and

determining that the target DSLAM is unavailable to receive new customers throughout a duration of an upgrade process.

4. The computing device-implemented method of claim 1 , where identifying the at least one new DSL path associated with the target DSLAM further comprises:

retrieving information regarding the at least one existing DSL path; and

identifying the at least one new DSL path based on the retrieved existing DSL path information.

5. The computing device-implemented method of claim 4 , further comprising:

establishing customer accounts on the target DSLAM based on the retrieved information and the at least one new DSL path.

6. The computing device-implemented method of claim 1 , where identifying pre-provisionable elements associated with the at least one new DSL path, further comprises:

determining whether elements in the at least one new DSL path are new network elements;

determining a customer type associated with the at least new DSL path,

where the customer type includes at least one of a static Internet Protocol (IP) customer, a dynamic IP customer, an affiliated customer, or a non-affiliated customer; and

identifying the pre-provisionable elements associated with the at least one new DSL path based on the determination of whether the elements in the at least one new DSL path are new network elements and based on the customer type.

7. The computing device-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining whether the identified pre-provisionable elements have been successfully provisioned;

maintaining a project status at pre-provisioning pending when the identified pre-provisionable elements have not been successfully provisioned;

generating a notification in the upgrade project indicating that the identified pre-provisionable elements have not been successfully provisioned;

updating the project status to pre-provisioning complete when the identified pre-provisionable elements have been successfully provisioned; and

receiving the cutover selection after updating the project status to pre-provisioning complete.

8. The computing device-implemented method of claim 7 , where a first soak period is observed following updating the project status to pre-provisioning complete.

9. The computing device-implemented method of claim 8 , where the first soak period comprises approximately two nights.

10. The computing device-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving modifications to at least one customer account associated with the source DSLAM following provisioning of the identified pre-provisionable elements;

synchronizing information associated with the at least one new DSL path based on the received modifications; and

repeating the provisioning of affected network elements.

11. The computing device-implemented method of claim 10 , further comprising:

determining whether the repeated provisioning is successful;

receiving the cutover selection when the repeated pre-provisioning is successful.

12. The computing device-implemented method of claim 11 , further comprising:

preventing additional modifications to a customer account associated with the source DSLAM when the repeated pre-provisioning is successful.

13. The computing device-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

provisioning un-provisioned elements following a physical upgrade of the at least one new DSL path;

blocking access to network elements associated with the existing DSL path; and

determining whether the at least one new DSL path tests successfully.

14. The computing device-implemented method of claim 13 , further comprising:

updating a status of the upgrade project to complete when the at least one new DSL path tests successfully; and

rolling back the upgrade project when the at least one new DSL path does not test successfully, where rolling back comprises transitioning the upgrade project to the at least one existing DSL path from the at least one new DSL path.

15. The computing device-implemented method of claim 14 , further comprising:

observing a second soak period prior to updating the status of the upgrade project to complete.

16. The computing device-implemented method of claim 14 , further comprising:

updating a current DSL inventory and provisioning database to reflect the at least one new DSL path; and

removing the blocked access to the network elements associated with the existing DLS path.

17. A device, comprising:

a memory to store one or more instructions; and

a processor to execute the one or more instructions to:

create an upgrade project designating a source digital subscriber line access mulitiplexer (DSLAM), a target DSLAM, and an upgrade type;

determine whether the source DSLAM and the target DSLAM are eligible for an upgrade based on the upgrade type;

identify at least one new digital subscriber line (DSL) path associated with the target DSLAM when the source DSLAM and the target DSLAM are eligible for the upgrade;

identify pre-provisionable elements associated with the at least one new DSL path;

provision the identified pre-provisionable elements prior to transition from at least one existing DSL path to the at least one new DSL path;

receive a cutover selection indicating that physical network changes associated with the target DSLAM have been made; and

provision non-pre-provisioned elements following receipt of the cutover selection.

18. The device of claim 17 , where, when identifying pre-provisionable elements associated with the at least one new DSL path, the processor is further configured to:

determine whether elements in the at least one new DSL path are new network elements;

determine a customer type associated with the at least new DSL path,

where the customer type includes at least one of a static Internet Protocol (IP) customer, a dynamic IP customer, an affiliated customer, or a non-affiliated customer; and

identify the pre-provisionable elements associated with the at least one new DSL path based on the determination of whether the elements in the at least one new DSL path are new network elements and based on the customer type.

19. The device of claim 17 , where the processor is further configured to:

determine whether the identified pre-provisionable elements have been successfully provisioned;

maintain a project status at pre-provisioning pending when the identified pre-provisionable elements have not been successfully provisioned;

generate a notification in the upgrade project indicating that the identified pre-provisionable elements have not been successfully provisioned;

update a project status to pre-provisioning complete when the identified pre-provisionable elements have been successfully provisioned; and

receive the cutover selection after updating the project status to pre-provisioning complete.

20. The device of claim 17 , where the processor is further configured to:

receive modifications to at least one customer account associated with the source DSLAM following provisioning of the identified pre-provisionable elements;

synchronize the information associated with the at least one new DSL path based on the received modifications; and

repeat the provisioning of affected network elements following synchronization of the modified information.

21. The device of claim 20 , where the processor is further configured to:

determine whether the repeated provisioning is successful; and

receive the cutover selection when the repeated pre-provisioning is successful.

22. A system, comprising:

a source digital subscriber line access mulitiplexer (DSLAM);

a target DSLAM;

a switch operatively connected to at least one of the source DSLAM and the target DSLAM;

a router operatively coupled to the switch; and

a network upgrade tool operatively coupled to the source DSLAM, the target DSLAM, the switch, and the router, where the network upgrade tool is configured to:

create an upgrade project designating the source DSLAM, the target DSLAM, and an upgrade type,

determine whether the source DSLAM and the target DSLAM are eligible for an upgrade based on the upgrade type,

identify at least one new digital subscriber line (DSL) path associated with the target DSLAM when the source DSLAM and the target DSLAM are eligible for the upgrade,

identify pre-provisionable elements associated with the at least one new DSL path,

provision the identified pre-provisionable elements prior to transition from at least one existing DSL path to the at least one new DSL path,

receive a cutover selection indicating that physical network changes associated with the target DSLAM have been made, and

provision non-pre-provisioned elements following receipt of the cutover selection.

23. The system of claim 22 , where the network upgrade tool is further configured to:

determine that the target DSLAM does not include existing customers that conflict with customers transferred from the source DSLAM, and

determine that the target DSLAM is unavailable to receive new customers throughout a duration of an upgrade process.

24. The system of claim 22 , where the network upgrade tool is further configured to:

determine whether elements in the at least one new DSL path are new network elements,

determine a customer type associated with the at least new DSL path,

where the customer type includes at least one of a static Internet Protocol (IP) customer, a dynamic IP customer, an affiliated customer, or a non-affiliated customer, and

identify pre-provisionable elements associated with the at least one new DSL path based on the determination of whether the elements in the at least one new DSL path are new network elements and based on the customer type.

25. The system of claim 22 , where the network upgrade tool is further configured to:

determine whether the identified pre-provisionable elements have been successfully provisioned,

maintain a project status at pre-provisioning pending when the identified pre-provisionable elements have not been successfully provisioned,

generate a notification in the upgrade project indicating that the identified pre-provisionable elements have not been successfully provisioned,

update a project status to pre-provisioning complete when the identified pre-provisionable elements have been successfully provisioned, and

receive the cutover selection only after updating the project status to pre-provisioning complete.
