Abstract

The present disclosure is directed to a system and method for interfacing transaction cards with mobile devices. In some implementations, a method includes identifying the mobile host device in response to at least insertion of at least a portion of the card into a port of the mobile host device. The mobile host device includes a Graphical User Interface (GUI). The card wirelessly executes financial transactions with a retail terminal independent of the mobile host device and presents and receives information through the GUI of the mobile host device. One or more commands are transmitted to the mobile host device in response to at least an event. The card substantially controls one or more hardware elements of the mobile host device using the one or more commands.

Claims (38)

1 . A method for interfacing a mobile host device and a card, comprising:

identifying the mobile host device in response to at least insertion of at least a portion of the card into a port of the mobile host device, wherein the mobile host device includes a Graphical User Interface (GUI), the card wirelessly executes financial transactions with a retail terminal independent of the mobile host device and presents and receives information through the GUI of the mobile host device; and

transmitting one or more commands to the mobile host device in response to at least an event, wherein the card substantially controls one or more hardware elements of the mobile host device using the one or more commands.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the port comprises a slot.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more commands comprise one or more first commands, the event comprises a first event, further comprising receiving one or more second commands from the mobile host device in response to at least a second event.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the second event comprises a user selecting a graphical element through the GUI of the mobile host device.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more second commands include one or more International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 7816.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the port comprises one of a SecureDigital (SD) slot, a miniSD slot, an MMC slot, a miniMMC slot, a microMMC slot, a USB port, miniUSB port, a microUSB firewire port, the Apple iDock port or a microSD slot.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

translating the one or more commands to a form compatible with the mobile host device prior to transmission; and

translating data from the mobile host device to a form compatible with the card.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the event comprises the card receiving a transaction request from the retail terminal.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more hardware elements comprises a display, the one or more commands presents through the GUI a request for a user to input information.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the request for user identification data including at least one of a Personal Identification Number (PIN), a user ID and password, or a biometric signature.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more commands request information associated with the one or more hardware elements.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the requested information includes at least one of a phone number, a device ID, a subscription ID, a network code, a connection status, location information, Wi-Fi beacons or GPS data.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more hardware components includes cellular radio technology, the one or more commands transmit packet data using cellular radio technology of the mobile host device.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the packet data includes at least one of Short Message Service (SMS) data, cellular data, or WiFi data.

15 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising transmitting a request to the mobile host device to establish a connection channel to forward to the card information associated with one or more parameters and received by the cellular radio technology of the mobile host device.

16 . A card, comprising:

a processing module that identifies a mobile host device in response to at least insertion of the card into a port of the mobile host device, wherein the mobile host device includes a Graphical User Interface (GUI), the card wirelessly executes financial transactions with retail terminals independent of the mobile host device and presents and receives information through the GUI of the mobile host device; and

an Application Program Interface (API) that transmits one or more commands to the mobile host device in response to at least an event, wherein the card substantially controls one or more hardware elements of the mobile host device using the one or more commands.

17 . The card of claim 16 , wherein the port comprises a slot.

18 . The card of claim 16 , wherein the one or more commands comprise one or more first commands, the event comprises a first event, the API further receives one or more second commands from the mobile host device in response to at least a second event.

19 . The card of claim 18 , wherein the second event comprises a user selecting a graphical element through the GUI of the mobile host device.

20 . The card of claim 18 , wherein the one or more second commands include one or more International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 7816 commands.

21 . The card of claim 16 , wherein the port comprises one of an SD slot, a miniSD slot, an MMC slot, a miniMMC slot, a microMMC slot, a USB port, miniUSB port, a microUSB firewire port, the Apple iDock port or a microSD slot.

22 . The card of claim 16 , the API further operable to:

translate the one or more commands to a form compatible with the mobile host device prior to transmission; and

translate data from the mobile host device to a form compatible with the card.

23 . The card of claim 16 , wherein the event comprises the card receiving a transaction request from a retail terminal.

24 . The card of claim 16 , wherein the one or more hardware elements comprises a display, the one or more commands presents through the GUI a request for a user to input information.

25 . The card of claim 24 , wherein the request comprises a request for user identification data including at least one of a PIN, a user ID and password, or a biometric signature.

26 . The card of claim 16 , wherein the one or more commands request information associated with the one or more hardware elements.

27 . The card of claim 26 , wherein the requested information includes at least one of a phone number, a device ID, a subscription ID, a network code, a connection status, location information, a Wi-Fi beacon or GPS data.

28 . The card of claim 16 , wherein the one or more hardware components includes cellular radio technology, the one or more commands transmit packet data using the cellular radio technology of the mobile host device.

29 . The card of claim 28 , wherein the packet data includes at least one of SMS data, cellular data, or WiFi data.

30 . The card of claim 28 , the API further operable to transmit a request to the mobile host device to establish a connection channel to forward to the card information associated with one or more parameters and received by the cellular radio technology of the mobile host device.
