Abstract

An improved field emission system and method is provided that involves field emission structures having electric or magnetic field sources. The magnitudes, polarities, and positions of the magnetic or electric field sources are configured to have desirable correlation properties, which may be in accordance with a code. The correlation properties correspond to a desired spatial force function where spatial forces between field emission structures correspond to relative alignment, separation distance, and the spatial force function.

Claims (28)

1. A coding method for a field emission system, comprising the steps of:

specifying at least one characteristic of each of a plurality of first field emission sources of a first field emission structure in accordance with a first code; and

specifying at least one characteristic of each of a plurality of second field emission sources of a second field emission structure in accordance with a second code, said first code and said second code defining a spatial force function, said first code corresponding to a code modulo of said plurality of first field emission sources, said second code corresponding to a code modulo of said plurality of second field emission sources, said first code and said second code defining a peak spatial force corresponding to substantial alignment of said code modulo of said plurality of first field emission sources with said code modulo of said plurality of second field emission sources, said first code and said second code also defining a plurality of off peak spatial forces corresponding to a plurality of different misalignments of said code modulo of said plurality of first field emission sources and said code modulo of said plurality of second field emission sources, said plurality of off peak spatial forces having a largest off peak spatial force, said largest off peak spatial force being less than half of said peak spatial force.

The method of claim 1 , wherein said at least one characteristic of each of said plurality of first field emission sources comprises at least one of a polarity, a position, or a field strength and at least one characteristic of each of said plurality of second field emission sources comprises at least one of a polarity, a position, or a field strength.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said first code or said second code is determined in accordance with at least one correlation function.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first code is the same as said second code.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the peak of said defined spatial force function is a repel force.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first field emission structure has a complementary autocorrelation relationship to said second field emission structure.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the peak of said defined spatial force function is an attractive force.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the peak of said defined spatial force function occurs when said first field emission structure is substantially correlated with said second field emission structure.

The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said first code or said second code comprises one of a Barker code, a Gold code, a Kasami sequence, a hyperbolic congruential code, a quadratic congruential code, a linear congruential code, a Welch-Costas array code, a Golumb-Costas array code, a pseudorandom code, a chaotic code, an Optimal Golomb Ruler code, a deterministic code, or a designed code.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said first code or said second code comprises a one dimensional code, a two dimensional code, a three dimensional code, or a four dimensional code.

11. A field emission system, comprising:

a first field emission structure comprising a plurality of first field emission sources each having at least one characteristic specified in accordance with a first code; and

a second field emission structure comprising a plurality of second field emission sources each having at least one characteristic specified in accordance with a second code, said first code and said second code defining a spatial force function, said first code corresponding to a code modulo of said plurality of first field emission sources, said second code corresponding to a code modulo of said plurality of second field emission sources, said first code and said second code defining a peak spatial force corresponding to substantial alignment of said code modulo of said plurality of first field emission sources with said code modulo of said plurality of second field emission sources, said first code and said second code also defining a plurality of off peak spatial forces corresponding to a plurality of different misalignments of said code modulo of said plurality of first field emission sources and said code modulo of said plurality of second field emission sources, said plurality of off peak spatial forces having a largest off peak spatial force, said largest off peak spatial force being less than half of said peak spatial force.

The system of claim 11 , wherein said at least one characteristic of each of said plurality of first field emission sources comprises at least one of a polarity, a position, or a field strength and at least one characteristic of each of said plurality of second field emission sources comprises at least one of a polarity, a position, or a field strength.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein said first code is the same as said second code.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein said first field emission structure has a complementary autocorrelation relationship to said second field emission structure.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the peak of said defined spatial force function occurs when said first field emission structure is substantially aligned with said second field emission structure.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of said first code or said second code comprises one of a Barker code, a Gold code, a Kasami sequence, a hyperbolic congruential code, a quadratic congruential code, a linear congruential code, a Welch-Costas array code, a Golumb-Costas array code, a pseudorandom code, a chaotic code, or an Optimal Golomb Ruler code.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of said first code or said second code comprises a one dimensional code, a two dimensional code, a three dimensional code, or a four dimensional code.

The system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of said plurality of first field emission sources comprises one of a permanent magnet, an electromagnet, an electrets, a magnetized ferromagnetic material, a portion of a magnetized ferromagnetic material, a soft magnetic material, or a superconductive material.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of said first field emission structures or said second field emission structures comprises a planer structure, a conical structure, a cylindrical structure, a curve surface, a stepped surface, or a correlated surface.

20. A coding method for a field emission system, comprising the steps of:

selecting a first code having first correlation properties;

selecting a second code having second correlation properties, said first correlation properties and said second correlation properties defining a spatial force function;

specifying at least one characteristic of each of a plurality of first field emission sources of a first field emission structure in accordance with said first code; and

specifying at least one characteristic of each of a plurality of second field emission sources of a second field emission structure in accordance with said second code, said first code corresponding to a code modulo of said plurality of first field emission sources, said second code corresponding to a code modulo of said plurality of second field emission sources, said first code and said second code defining a peak spatial force corresponding to substantial alignment of said code modulo of said plurality of first field emission sources with said code modulo of said plurality of second field emission sources, said first code and said second code also defining a plurality of off peak spatial forces corresponding to a plurality of different misalignments of said code modulo of said plurality of first field emission sources and said code modulo of said plurality of second field emission sources, said plurality of off peak spatial forces having a largest off peak spatial force, said largest off peak spatial force being less than half of said peak spatial force.
