Abstract

Methods and devices for ablating portions of a tissue volume with electromagnetic radiation (EMR) to produce lattices of EMR-treated ablation islets in the tissue are disclosed, including lattices of micro-holes, micro-grooves, and other structures. Also, methods and devices for using the ablated islets are disclosed, including to deliver chromophores, filler, drugs and other substances to the tissue volume.

Claims (24)

1 . A method of trans-dermal delivery of substances comprising:

ablating a portion of the tissue with electromagnetic radiation to form a plurality of channels extending to a depth below a surface of the tissue;

delivering a substance into one or more of the channels; and

sealing said one or more channels, so as to embed the substance within the channels.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of delivering a substance into the one or more channels further comprises using a delivery technique selected from the group consisting of diffusion, vesicle/particle transporters, physical mechanisms, chemical mechanisms, electrical mechanisms, electroporation, iontoporation, sonophoresis, magnetophoresis, photomechanical waves, niosomes, and transfersomes.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of sealing said one or more channels further comprises using a technique selected from the group consisting of applying a healing substance to said portion of tissue and covering said portion of tissue.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein said covering said portion of tissue further comprises at least one of applying tape or applying sutures to said portion.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said substance is a drug.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the channels extend to a depth in a range of approximately 5 micrometers to 5 millimeters.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue is skin tissue and wherein the channels extend from the surface of the skin tissue to the epidermis.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue is skin tissue and wherein the channels extend from the surface of the skin tissue to the dermis.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue is skin tissue and wherein the channels extend from the surface of the skin tissue to below the dermis.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the channels has a width in a range of approximately 1 micrometer to 1 millimeters.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the channels has a width of approximately 50 micrometers to 100 micrometers.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the fill-factor of the channels in a cross-sectional area is between approximately 1 and 90 percent.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the fill-factor of the channels in a cross-sectional area in a plane extending through the channels is between approximately 25 and 40 percent.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the center-to-center distance between adjacent channels is between approximately 10 micrometers and 5 millimeters.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue is ablated with electromagnetic radiation having one or more wavelengths of between approximately 190 to 350 nanometers.

16 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue is ablated with electromagnetic radiation having one or more wavelengths of between approximately 1.3 and 12 micrometers.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising ablating a second portion of the tissue with electromagnetic radiation to form at least one additional channel extending to a depth from a surface of the tissue, wherein the at least one additional channel has dimensions different than those of the plurality of channels.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of channels is a first plurality and the method further comprising ablating a second portion of the tissue with electromagnetic radiation to form a second plurality of channels extending to a depth from a surface of the tissue, wherein the second plurality of channels have dimensions different than those of the first plurality of channels.

19 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of channels includes at least first and second sets of channels, the channels of the first set having dimensions different than the channels of the second set.

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the channels of the first set extend to a first depth and the channels of the second set extend to a second depth that is deeper than the first depth.
