Abstract

A back support includes a base, a seat, and a back frame pivoted to the base. The seating unit has a flexible back (i.e., back shell) supported on the back frame and having stiff upper and lower sections connected by a forwardly protruding flexible lumbar section for providing lumbar support to a seated user. A spring mechanism is connected to the back frame and to a center lower edge of the flexible back. The spring mechanism biases the flexible back to bias the lumbar toward a forwardly protruding shape to provide optimal lumbar support when in the upright position and also during recline of the seated user.

Claims (22)

1. A seating unit comprising:

a base;

a seat operably supported on the base;

a back frame pivoted to the base;

a flexible back having an upper section pivoted to the back frame and a lower section that defines with the upper section a forwardly protruding lumbar portion for lumbar support to a seated user, the lower section being operably connected to one of the seat, the back frame, and the base at a location forward of a center region of a lower edge of the flexible back; and

a spring mechanism connected between a center of the back frame and to the flexible back at a location near the lower edge.

2. The seating unit defined in claim 1 , wherein the spring mechanism includes an extensible spring.

3. The seating unit defined in claim 1 , wherein the flexible back has an intermediary section between the upper section and the lower section, the intermediary section and the upper section defining the forwardly protruding lumbar portion.

4. The seating unit defined in claim 3 , wherein the intermediary section is an independent component operably connected to the upper section and to the lower section.

5. The seating unit defined in claim 3 , including a torsional lumbar support mechanism operably attached to the flexible back, the torsional lumbar support mechanism biasing the flexible back toward a forwardly protruding shape for optimal lumbar support.

6. The seating unit defined in claim 1 , wherein the flexible back includes a back shell defining both the upper section and the lower section, and wherein a majority of the upper section is stiff and a majority of the lower section is stiff.

7. The seating unit defined in claim 6 , including a torsional lumbar support mechanism operably attached to the back shell and biasing the shell toward a forwardly protruding shape for optimal lumbar support.

8. The seating unit defined in claim 6 , wherein the spring mechanism is connected to the back shell at a center location near the lower edge.

9. The seating unit defined in claim 1 , wherein the upper section is pivotally connected to the back frame at a plurality of locations.

10. The seating unit defined in claim 1 , wherein a top of the back frame is curvilinear and the upper section is pivotally connected in at least one location proximate to an apex of the back frame.

11. The seating unit defined in claim 10 , wherein the spring mechanism is connected near the apex of the back frame and also is connected to the flexible back at a center location near the lower edge.

12. A method of seating comprising:

providing a base;

providing a seat operably supported on the base;

providing a back frame pivoted to the base;

providing a flexible back having an upper section pivoted to the back frame and a lower section that defines with the upper section a forwardly protruding lumbar portion for lumbar support to a seated user, the lower section being pivoted to one of the seat, the back frame, and the base at a location forward of a center region of a lower edge of the flexible back; and

connecting a spring mechanism between a center of the back frame and to the flexible back at a location near the lower edge, and biasing the forwardly protruding lumbar portion using the spring mechanism to a forwardly protruding shaped position providing optimal lumbar support.
