Abstract

A automated banking machine ( 10 ) operates responsive to data read from user cards to carry out financial transactions, and method of operating the machine is provided. The method includes causing with a terminal application, at least one transaction function device of the automated banking machine to operate through at least one communication with an XFS layer of the automated banking machine. The automated banking machine may include a cash dispenser and the transaction function may include dispensing cash.

Claims (23)

1. A method of operation of an automated banking machine, wherein the machine is operative responsive to data read from user cards, comprising:

a) communicating at least one first communication from an application software component operating in at least one computer of the automated banking machine, to a security manager software component operating in the at least one computer, wherein the machine includes a plurality of hardware devices each capable of carrying out a respective hardware function, wherein the hardware devices include a cash dispenser and a card reader, wherein the machine includes at least one eXtensions for Financial Services (XFS) software component operating in the at least one computer, wherein the machine includes module interface framework software in operative connection with the at least one XFS software component in the at least one computer, wherein the module interface framework software includes a plurality of module interface components, each of which respectively correspond to one of the plurality of hardware devices;

b) communicating at least one second communication from the application software component, through an XFS software component and a module interface component, to a device driver software component operating in the at least one computer, wherein the device driver software component is in operative connection with the security manager software component; and

c) causing at least one hardware device to carry out at least one hardware function responsive to operation of the device driver software component operating in the at least one computer, wherein the device driver software component is operative to cause the at least one hardware device to carry out the at least one hardware function responsive to both the at least one second communication and operation of the security manager software component.

2. A method of operation of an automated banking machine, wherein the machine is operative responsive to data read from user cards, comprising:

a) communicating at least one first communication from an application software component operating in at least one computer of an automated banking machine to a security manager software component operating in the at least one computer, wherein the machine includes a plurality of hardware devices each capable of carrying out a respective hardware function, wherein the hardware devices include a cash dispenser and a card reader;

b) communicating at least one second communication from the application software component, through at least one eXtensions for Financial Services (XFS) software component operating in the at least one computer, to a device driver software component operating in the at least one computer, wherein the device driver software component is in operative connection with the security manager software component; and

c) causing the at least one hardware device to carry out a hardware function, responsive to operation of the device driver software component operating in the at least one computer, responsive to both the at least one second communication and operation of the security manager software component.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the automated banking machine includes module interface framework software in operative connection with the at least one XFS software component operating in the at least one computer, wherein the module interface framework software includes a plurality of module interface components, wherein each module interface component respectively corresponds to one of the plurality of hardware devices, wherein in (b) a module interface component operatively communicates the at least one second communication to the device driver software component.

4. The method according to claim 2 , wherein in (a) and (b) the at least one first and second communications respectively, are associated with a hardware function including a cash dispense, wherein in (c) the at least one hardware device includes the cash dispenser carrying out the hardware function, including dispensing cash.

5. The method according to claim 2 , and further comprising:

d) prior to (c), responsive to the at least one first communication in (a), communicating at least one third communication from the security manager software component to the device driver software component,

wherein (c) includes causing the at least one hardware device to carry out the hardware function, responsive to operation of the at least one device driver software component operating in the at least one computer, responsive to both the at least one second communication and the at least one third communication.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein in (d) the at least one third communication comprises an authorization for the device driver software component to cause the hardware device to operate responsive to the at least one second communication.

7. The method according to claim 6 , and further comprising: through operation of the at least one computer responsive to operation of the device driver software component, authenticating the at least one third communication.

8. The method according to claim 7 , further comprising: through operation of the at least one computer responsive to operation of the security manager software component, authenticating the at least one first communication.

9. The method according to claim 5 , and further comprising:

e) communicating at least one fourth communication from the application software component, through the at least one XFS software component operating in the at least one computer, to the device driver software component operating in the at least one computer; and

f) operating the at least one computer responsive to the absence of at least one further communication from the security manager software component authorizing the device driver software component to operate the at least one hardware device in response to the at least one fourth communication, to cause the at least one hardware device not to operate in response to the at least one fourth communication.

10. A method of operation of an automated banking machine, wherein the machine is operative responsive to data read from user cards, comprising:

a) operating at least one computer in the automated banking machine, to cause at least one first communication to be communicated between an application software component operating in the at least one computer, and a security manager software component operating in the at least one computer;

b) operating the at least one computer to cause at least one second communication to be communicated between the application software component and an extensions for financial services (XFS) software component operating in the at least one computer, wherein the at least one computer includes device driver software component operating therein, wherein the device driver software component is in operative communication with the security manager software component and the XFS software component, and wherein at least one of a card reader and a cash dispenser of the machine is selectively caused to operate responsive to operation of the device driver software component;

c) operating the at least one computer to cause the device driver software component to operate to cause operation of at least one of the card reader and the cash dispenser, wherein the device driver software component is caused to operate the at least one of the card reader and the cash dispenser responsive to occurrence of both the at least one second communication between the application software component and the XFS software component in (b), and the at least one first communication between the application software component and the security manager software component in (a).
