Abstract

The present invention is a brace or spinal implant that can be inserted into vertebra that has had a cavity surgically created therein. The trapezoidal shaped spinal implant includes an opening that allows the surgical team to view the dura mater prior to packing the implant with osteogenic substances.

Claims (82)

1. A method of utilizing an implant sized for a surgical cavity created by surgical removal of a part of a spinal column during a spinal surgical procedure, wherein said implant is capable of being fitted between a superior side and an inferior side of said surgical cavity, said method comprising the steps of:

a) supplying a span of consecutively joined receptacles comprising a plurality of peripheral openings a surgeon can see through prior to addition of osteogenic substances and into which said osteogenic substances can be packed before completion of said spinal surgical procedure, wherein said span of consecutively joined receptacles comprises:

i) an inner divider, comprising: a short side; a long side opposite of said short side; a first converging side converging from a first corner of said long side to a first corner of said short side; a second converging side converging from a second corner of said long side to a second corner of said short side; and an aperture;

ii) one or more first dividers extending in a first direction away from said inner divider; each one of first dividers comprising an opening aligned with said inner divider's aperture;

iii) one or more second dividers extending in a second direction away from said inner divider; each one of said second dividers comprising an aperture aligned with said inner divider's aperture;

iv) a first universal corner post contacting said first corners of said short sides of said dividers;

v) a second universal corner post contacting said second corners of said short sides of said dividers;

vi) one or more universal posts contacting said first converging sides of said dividers; and

vii) one or more universal posts contacting said second converging sides of said dividers;

b) measuring said surgical cavity;

c) sizing said implant for a custom fit for said surgical cavity by severing said implant through at least one cross-section thereof;

d) holding said custom fitted implant such that said short sides of said dividers face said surgical cavity;

e) inserting said custom fitted implant into said surgical cavity, further comprising the steps of:

i) positioning said short sides within said surgical cavity;

ii) engaging said superior side of said surgical cavity with said custom fitted implant; and

iii) engaging said inferior side of said surgical cavity with said custom fitted implant; and

f) packing said custom fitted implant with osteogenic material after said custom fitted implant is inserted into said surgical cavity; or

g) after insertion of said custom fitted implant into said surgical cavity, but prior to packing said custom fitted implant with osteogenic material, removing said custom fitted implant from said surgical cavity for packing said custom fitted implant with osteogenic material, and thereafter, reinserting said custom fitted implant packed with osteogenic material into said surgical cavity.

The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of manufacturing said custom fitted implant to comprise one or more brakes adjacent either first ends, second ends or both ends of said long sides of said dividers such that each brake extends laterally outward from either said first converging sides or said second converging sides of said dividers.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of including a seventh universal post intermediate between said first universal corner post and said second universal corner post.

4. The method of claim 3 further comprising the step of extending one or more ties between said universal posts.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising the steps of:

a) angling said first universal corner post at about ninety degrees to simultaneously connect with said first converging sides and said short sides of said dividers; and

b) angling said second universal corner post at about ninety degrees to simultaneously connect with said second converging sides and said short sides of said dividers.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising the step of sizing said peripheral openings range in cross-sectional area of from about 36 millimeters 2 to about 225 millimeters 2 .

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein said step of sizing said implant for a custom fit for said surgical cavity by severing said implant through at least one cross-section thereof creates:

a) a set of spikes, capable of penetrating bone, extending from one of said first dividers; or

b) a group of spikes, capable of penetrating bone, extending from one of said second dividers; or

c) said set of spikes extending from said one of said first dividers and said group of spikes extending from said one of said second dividers.

A method of utilizing an implant sized for a surgical cavity created by surgical removal of a part of a spinal column during a spinal surgical procedure, wherein said implant is capable of being fitted between a superior side and an inferior side of said surgical cavity, said method comprising the steps of:

a) supplying a span of consecutively joined receptacles comprising a plurality of peripheral openings a surgeon can see through prior to addition of osteogenic substances and into which said osteogenic substances can be packed before completion of said spinal surgical procedure, wherein said span of consecutively joined receptacles comprises:

i) a plurality of trapezoidal dividers, wherein each divider comprises: an inward side; an outward side; a first side connected with said outward side and said inward side creating a first outward corner with said outward side and a first inward corner with said inward side; a second side connected with said outward side and said inward side creating a second outward corner with said outward side and a second inward corner with said inward side; and an aperture;

ii) a first universal corner post contacting said first inward corners;

iii) a second universal corner post contacting said second inward corners;

iv) one or more universal posts contacting said first sides of said dividers; and

vii) one or more universal posts contacting said second sides of said dividers;

b) measuring said surgical cavity;

c) sizing said implant for a custom fit for said surgical cavity by severing said implant through at least one cross-section thereof,

d) inserting said custom fitted implant into said surgical cavity, further comprising the steps of:

i) positioning said inward sides within said surgical cavity;

ii) engaging said superior side of said surgical cavity with said custom fitted implant; and

iii) engaging said inferior side of said surgical cavity with said custom fitted implant; and

e) packing said custom fitted implant with osteogenic material after said custom fitted implant is inserted into said surgical cavity; or

f) after insertion of said custom fitted implant into said surgical cavity, but prior to packing said custom fitted implant with osteogenic material, removing said custom fitted implant from said surgical cavity for packing said custom fitted implant with osteogenic material, and thereafter, reinserting said custom fitted implant packed with osteogenic material into said surgical cavity.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein said step of sizing said implant for a custom fit for said surgical cavity by severing said implant through at least one cross-section thereof creates:

a) a set of spikes, capable of penetrating bone, extending in a first direction from a first one of said plurality of trapezoidal dividers; or

b) a group of spikes, capable of penetrating bone, extending in a second direction from a second one of said plurality of trapezoidal dividers; or

c) said set of spikes extending in said first direction from said first one of said plurality of trapezoidal dividers and said group of spikes extending in said second direction from said second one of said plurality of trapezoidal dividers.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising the steps of:

a) manufacturing said custom fitted implant to comprise one or more brakes adjacent either said first outward corners, said second outward corners or both outward corners of said trapezoidal dividers such that each brake extends laterally outward from either said first sides or said second sides of said trapezoidal dividers;

b) positioning one or more universal posts intermediate between said first universal corner post and said second universal corner post; and

c) extending one or more ties between said universal posts.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising the steps of:

a) angling said first universal corner post at about ninety degrees to simultaneously connect with said first sides and said inward sides of said trapezoidal dividers; and

b) angling said second universal corner post at about ninety degrees to simultaneously connect with said second sides and said inward sides of said trapezoidal dividers.

12. A method of utilizing an implant sized for a surgical cavity created by surgical removal of a part of a spinal column during a spinal surgical procedure, wherein said implant is capable of being fitted between a superior side and an inferior side of said surgical cavity, said method comprising the steps of:

a) supplying a base divider;

b) extending sequentially a plurality of dividers from said base divider, wherein each said divider comprises: an inward side; an outward side; a first side connected with said outward side and said inward side creating a first outward corner with said outward side and a first inward corner with said inward side; a second side, opposite said first side, connected with said outward side and said inward side creating a second outward corner with said outward side and a second inward corner with said inward side; and an aperture;

c) connecting one or more posts to said first inward corners;

d) connecting one or more posts to said second inward corners;

e) connecting one or more posts to said first sides;

f) connecting one or more posts to said second sides;

g) positioning said dividers and said posts to create a plurality of peripheral openings about said implant a surgeon can see through prior to addition of osteogenic substances and into which said osteogenic substances can be packed before completion of said spinal surgical procedure;

h) measuring said surgical cavity;

i) sizing said implant for a custom fit for said surgical cavity by severing said implant through at least one cross-section thereof;

j) inserting said custom fitted implant into said surgical cavity, further comprising the steps of:

i) positioning said inward sides within said surgical cavity;

ii) engaging said superior side of said surgical cavity with said custom fitted implant; and

iii) engaging said inferior side of said surgical cavity with said custom fitted implant; and

k) packing said custom fitted implant with osteogenic material after said custom fitted implant is inserted into said surgical cavity; or

l) after insertion of said custom fitted implant into said surgical cavity, but prior to packing said custom fitted implant with osteogenic material, removing said custom fitted implant from said surgical cavity for packing said custom fitted implant with osteogenic material, and thereafter, reinserting said custom fitted implant packed with osteogenic material into said surgical cavity.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein said step of sizing said implant for a custom fit for said surgical cavity by severing said implant through at least one cross-section thereof creates:

a) a set of spikes, capable of penetrating bone, extending in a first direction from a first one of said plurality of dividers; or

b) a group of spikes, capable of penetrating bone, extending in a second direction from a second one of said plurality of dividers such that said base divider is severed from said custom fitted implant; or

c) said set of spikes extending in said first direction from said first one of said plurality of dividers and said group of spikes extending in said second direction from said second one of said plurality of dividers such that said base divider is severed from said custom fitted implant.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising the steps of:

a) manufacturing said custom fitted implant to comprise one or more brakes adjacent either said first outward corners, said second outward corners or both said first and said second outward corners such that each brake extends laterally outward from either said first sides or said second sides of said dividers;

b) positioning one or more posts intermediate between said one or more posts connecting said first inward corners and said one or more posts connecting said second inward corners; and

c) extending one or more ties between said posts.

15. The method of claim 14 further comprising the steps of:

a) angling one or more of said one or more posts connected with said first inward corners to simultaneously connect with one or more first sides and one or more inward sides of said dividers; and

b) angling one or more of said one or more posts connected with said second inward corners to simultaneously connect with one or more second sides and one or more inward sides of said dividers.
