Abstract

The present invention concerns shape memory polymers and shape memory polymer composition sensitive towards two different external stimuli.

Claims (22)

1 . A shape memory polymer comprising at least two types of switching segments which are sensitive towards different external stimuli.

2 . The shape memory polymer of claim 1 , wherein the external stimulus is selected from the group consisting of a change in temperature, irradiation with a light, irradiation with a gamma ray, a change in pH, and a change in an ion concentration.

3 . The shape memory polymer of claim 1 , wherein the at least two types of switching segments are sensitive towards a combination of stimuli selected from the group consisting of a change in temperature and irradiation with a light, a change in temperature and a change of pH, and a change in temperature and a change of an ion concentration.

4 . The shape memory polymer of claims 1 , wherein the at least two types of switching segments are present in the form of distinct blocks within a block-copolymer structure.

5 . The shape memory polymer of claims 1 , wherein the at least two different types of switching segments are present in the form of distinct bocks within the main chain of the polymer and as side chains of the polymer.

6 . The shape memory polymer composition claims 1 , wherein the composition is selected from the group consisting of a blend, a network structure, an IPN or a semi-IPN.

7 . A method of programming a shape memory material comprising the steps of:

a) selecting a shape memory material from the group consisting of the shape memory polymer of claim 1 and the shape memory composition of claim 11 ,

b) shaping the shape memory material into a desired permanent shape;

c) deforming the shape memory material obtained after step a) into a desired first temporary shape;

d) fixing the first temporary shape in accordance with a triggering mechanism of a switching segment for the desired first temporary shape;

e) deforming the product of step c) into a desired second temporary shape; and

f) fixing the second temporary shape in accordance with a triggering mechanism of a switching segment for the desired second temporary shape.

8 . A method of preparing a shape memory polymer of claims 1 , comprising the reaction of suitably functionalized macromonomers corresponding to at least one type of the segments of the shape memory polymer with a suitable reactant for providing a chemical linkage between the segments.

9 . A method of preparing a shape memory polymer composition claim 11 , comprising the steps of;

providing at least two shape memory polymer components,

blending the at least two different shape memory polymer components, and

optionally subjecting the obtained blend to a post-blending reaction.

10 . (canceled)

11 . A shape memory polymer composition, comprising at least two types of switching segments which are sensitive towards different external stimuli.

12 . The shape memory polymer composition of claim 11 , wherein the external stimulus is selected from the group consisting of a change in temperature, irradiation with a light, irradiation with a gamma ray, a change in pH, and a change in an ion concentration.

13 . The shape memory polymer composition of claim 11 , wherein the at least two types of switching segments are sensitive towards a combination of stimuli selected from the group consisting of a change in temperature and irradiation with a light, a change in temperature and a change of pH, and a change in temperature and a change of an ion concentration.
