Abstract

A card actuated automated banking machine ( 152, 198, 200 ) includes a plurality of transaction function devices. The transaction function devices include a card reader ( 170 ), a printer ( 174 ), a bill dispenser ( 176 ), a coin dispenser ( 178 ), a display ( 182 ), a check imaging device ( 186 ) and at least one processor ( 190 ). The automated banking machine is operative responsive to receiving a check and certification data to dispense cash in exchange for the check. The person presenting the check need not provide user identifying inputs through input devices in order to receive cash for the check. A check recipient prior to presenting the check for payment is also enabled to verify that the check will be paid through communication with at least one computer ( 204 ) through at least one consumer interface device ( 208 ).

and wherein the automated banking machine is operative to dispense the cash to the machine user in (e) responsive at least in part to the at least one message sent by the financial account computer.

12. The method according to claim 10 and further comprising:

h) prior to (a), receiving through an interface device in operative connection with the financial account computer, data corresponding to at least some of the check identifying data and the certification data;

i) responsive to (h), determining through operation of the financial account computer that the received check identifying data has the corresponding relationship with to the certification data;

j) responsive at least in part to the determination in (i), causing at least one output through the interface device responsive to operation of the financial account computer, indicative that the check can be exchanged for cash in the amount.

13. The method according to claim 12 wherein in (h) the interface device includes a text message interface.

14. The method according to claim 12 wherein in (h) the interface device includes an interactive voice response (IVR) interface.

15. The method according to claim 12 wherein in (h) the interface device includes a Web interface.

16. The method according to claim 12 wherein in (h) the interface device includes an interface for a mobile phone.

17. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the automated banking machine includes a card reader operative to read data from user cards, and wherein the machine is selectively operative to read data from a user card corresponding to a financial account, dispense cash, and cause a financial account to be assessed for the cash dispensed,

and wherein in (a) through (e) the card reader does not read data from a card of the machine user.

18. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the automated banking machine includes a keypad, and wherein in (c) the at least one input includes a plurality of manual inputs through the keypad.

19. The method according to claim 1 , wherein in (b) the check reading device is operative to generate an electronic image of at least a portion of the check;
