Abstract

The present invention relates to a method of making an optical device for contrast enhancement of a viewing display, such as a plasma display panel, a liquid crystal display panel, an inorganic light emitting diode display panel, or an organic light emitting diode display panel.

Claims (30)

1. A method for making an optical device comprising:

providing a first film having a first plurality of transparent protrusions extending from a first surface;

providing a second film having a second plurality of transparent protrusions extending from a second surface;

joining the first and second films, wherein the first plurality of transparent protrusions directly engage to mate and self align with the second plurality of transparent protrusions to form a plurality of spaced openings; and

at least partially filling the openings with an opaque material to form an optical device having alternating opaque and transparent sections.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein providing comprises using a casting process, an embossing molding process, a compression molding process, or an injection molding process.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein joining comprises adhering the first and second films using a pair of nip rollers.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein filling comprises dispensing the opaque material into a nip formed by the pair of nip rollers.

5. The method according to 4 , wherein dispensing is by a gravity fed dispenser, a pump dispenser, or capillary action.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein providing comprises selecting first and second films having substantially equal refractive indices.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein providing comprises selecting first and second films wherein the refractive index of the opaque material is within 0.03 of the refractive index of the first and second films.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein providing comprises selecting first and second films wherein the refractive index of the opaque material is greater than the refractive index of the first and second films.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein providing comprises selecting first and second films that are substantially the same in cross-section, but the first portion is inverted as compared to the second portion.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein providing comprises selecting first and second films wherein the first plurality of transparent protrusions includes at least one mating surface that self-aligns with at least one mating surface of the second plurality of transparent protrusions.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein providing comprises selecting first and second films wherein the first and second plurality of transparent protrusions have a cross-sectional shape which is at least one of triangular, trapezoidal, rectangular, and square.

12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein providing comprises selecting first and second films wherein the plurality of openings have a cross-sectional shape which is at least one of triangular, trapezoidal, rectangular, and square.

13. The method according to claim 1 , wherein providing comprises selecting first and second films wherein the first and second plurality of transparent protrusions have an aspect ratio of from about 1 to about 5.

14. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the opaque sections have an aspect ratio of from about 0.5 to about 10.

15. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the duty factor of the opaque sections is from about 0.05 to about 0.85.

16. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second plurality of transparent protrusions extend horizontally across the optical device.

17. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second plurality of transparent protrusions extend vertically across the optical device.

18. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the thickness of the optical device is from about 0.1 mm to about 2.5 mm.

19. The method according to claim 1 , wherein sides of the opaque sections are linear.

20. The method according to claim 1 , wherein sides of the opaque sections are curved.

21. The method according to claim 1 further comprising:

forming a transparent layer adjacent at least a portion of the first or second surface of the optical device.

22. The method according to claim 1 further comprising:

positioning at least a portion of the optical device proximate at least a portion of an output surface of a viewing display.

23. The method according to claim 22 , wherein the viewing display is at least one of a plasma display panel, a liquid crystal display panel, an inorganic light emitting diode display panel, and an organic light emitting diode display panel.

24. The method according to claim 23 , wherein the viewing display is a plasma display panel.
