Abstract

This application presents to an endoscope having a compact distal tip, and to a method for constructing same. In some embodiments one or more optical and sensing elements are mounted directly on an internal surface of a lumen within an external housing, which housing comprises an outer wall of the endoscope tip. Space saved by eliminating intervening containing elements can be used to enhance endoscope performance and/or reduce endoscope size.

Claims (42)

1. An endoscope tip comprising:

an external housing defining a lens mounting portion at a distal end, said lens mounting portion configured as a first lumen having an internal surface therewithin, wherein the internal surface defines an obstructive feature defining a narrowest diameter of the lens mounting portion, the external housing further defining at least a second lumen separate from the lens mounting portion, the second lumen suitable for one of a working channel, a fluid channel or carrying a light guiding fiberoptic bundle; and

an optical element assembly positioned within said lens mounting portion comprising a first component, a final component and one or more intermediate components, said components comprising at least one light-transmissive element and at least one spacer in direct contact with the internal surface of the lens mounting portion,

wherein said final component is a spacer that is not a lens and the spacer abuts the obstructive feature defined by the internal surface of the lens mounting portion,

wherein at least said first component is glued directly on said internal surface of said first lumen and prevents distal movement of the intermediate components,

wherein said first component and obstructive feature are configured to maintain said intermediate components fixed in position within said lens mounting portion without a lens tube configured to hold, organize or contain said optical element assembly; and

wherein the endoscope tip has a diameter between 2 mm and 4 mm.

2. The endoscope tip of claim 1 , wherein said external housing is of unitary construction.

3. The endoscope tip of claim 1 , wherein said external housing is of split construction and is openable to provide access to said first lumen of said housing during fabrication of said endoscope tip.

4. The endoscope tip of claim 1 , wherein one of said intermediate components is positioned by being mounted in flush contact with said first component.

5. The endoscope tip of claim 1 , wherein said first component, said one or more intermediate components and said final component are configured to be serially positioned along a length of said lens mounting portion of said housing, said length of said lens mounting portion being sized and positioned to accommodate and to align said optical elements assembly.

6. The endoscope tip of claim 5 , said one or more intermediate components being unattached to said first lumen and maintained in place by walls of said first lumen and by said first and final components.

7. The endoscope tip of claim 5 , wherein said final component is positioned against the obstructive feature within said lens mounting portion, said obstructive feature configured to limit advancement of the final component at a desired location within the first lumen.

8. The endoscope tip of claim 5 , wherein said first, one or more intermediate, and final components comprise an objective lens array.

9. The endoscope tip of claim 1 , wherein said one or more intermediate components are unattached to said first lumen and maintained in place by said first and final components.

10. The endoscope tip of claim 1 , further comprising a shaped portion formed in said housing, said shaped portion configured to conform to an optical sensor array such that an optical axis of the optical sensor array is aligned with an optical axis of said first component to reduce calibration to one axis and further wherein said shaped portion is formed as a flat shelf surface.

11. The endoscope of claim 1 , further comprising an objective lens array installed within a first lumen of said housing, wherein the array includes the at least one light-transmissive element.

12. The endoscope tip of claim 11 , wherein said objective lens array comprises a plurality of lenses and the least one spacer.

13. The endoscope tip of claim 1 , wherein a distal portion of a fiberoptic bundle is mounted within one of said at least a second lumen of said housing and attached directly to said housing.

14. The endoscope tip of claim 13 , wherein said fiberoptic bundle is a coherent fiberoptic bundle.

15. An endoscope tip according to claim 1 wherein said first component is mounted directly into an appropriately sized and shaped first lumen manufactured within a housing of said endoscope tip without intermediary subassembly frames.

16. An endoscope tip according to claim 1 constructed of a unitary housing within which said first component is mounted directly, absent an intervening lens tube or container forming a sub-assembly for containing said first component.

17. An endoscope tip according to claim 1 constructed of a unitary housing within which an electronic component is mounted directly, absent intervening subassemblies for containing said electronic component.

18. An endoscope tip according to claim 1 wherein said external housing is unitary and said first lumen is a first shaped lumen formed to accommodate said first component, and said first component is mounted directly within said first shaped lumen without an additional intervening component lens tube or container housing said first component.

19. An endoscope tip according to claim 1 , wherein said external housing is unitary and further comprising a third shaped lumen formed to accommodate an electronic component, said electronic component being mounted within said third shaped lumen without an additional intervening lens tube or container housing said electronic component.

20. An endoscope tip according to claim 1 , wherein said first component comprises an optical lens.

21. An endoscope tip according to claim 1 , wherein said at least a second lumen includes a second lumen having an internal surface configured to receive an optical fiber bundle and a third lumen having an internal surface configured to receive an imaging sensor assembly directly mounted on said internal surface of said third lumen.

22. An endoscope tip according to claim 1 , wherein an optical sensor array is mounted directly on an internal surface of said at least a second lumen, wherein said optical sensor array is mounted parallel to an axis of said first component.

23. An endoscope tip according to claim 1 , further comprising:

(e) a fiberoptic bundle mounted directly on said internal surface of said wall of said first lumen, said fiberoptic bundle configured to transmit an image from said first optical element.

24. An endoscope tip comprising:

a housing including a cylindrically shaped cavity and a lens mounting portion, the lens mounting portion defining a first lumen, said first lumen comprising a wall having an internal surface and an external surface, said internal surface defining an obstructive feature configured as a projection to narrow the diameter of the lens mounting portion and said external surface comprising an outer wall of said endoscope tip;

wherein said cavity

comprises a wall having an internal surface and an external surface, and

is configured as a proximal extension of the first lumen such that the external surface of the wall of the cavity is coextensive with the external surface of the wall of the first lumen; and

a prism is mounted to the internal surface of the wall of the cavity;

an optical assembly including a first component, a final component and a plurality of intermediate components, said components comprising at least one light-transmissive element and at least one spacer in direct contact with the internal surface of the wall of the lens mounting portion,
