Abstract

A method and system for controlling actuators in a mechanical reproducing piano or other instrument. In one implementation, a single finite state machine is provided to control all the actuators. The finite state machine may be or include a shift register or a toggle register, which increases the operating speed. When a note is to be played, the desired dynamic is mapped into a start vector and a stop vector. The actuator is turned on when the state of the finite state machine is equal to the start vector, and is turned off when the state of the finite state machine is equal to the stop vector. Furthermore, the period of the finite state machine is adjusted to be directly proportional to the supply voltage. This allows notes to be played at the desired dynamics even when the supply voltage fluctuates.

Claims (11)

1. A system for providing a signal to an actuator in an instrument, comprising:

control logic; and

a finite state machine;

wherein the control logic controls the period of the finite state machine such that the period increases in response to an increase in the supply voltage and decreases in response to a decrease in the supply voltage;

wherein the control logic applies a periodic signal to an actuator, the amplitude of the signal increasing in response to an increase in the supply voltage and decreasing in response to a decrease in the supply voltage, and the period of the signal being the period of the finite state machine.

2. A system for providing a signal to an actuator in an instrument, comprising:

control logic;

wherein the control logic receives a supply voltage;

wherein the control logic measures the supply voltage; and

wherein the control logic applies a periodic signal to an actuator, the amplitude of the signal increasing in response to an increase in the supply voltage and decreasing in response to a decrease in the supply voltage, and the period of the signal increasing in response to an increase in the supply voltage measurement and decreasing in response to a decrease in the supply voltage measurement.

3. A system according to claim 2 , wherein the supply voltage measurement comprises a digital measurement.
