Abstract

A system and method for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system is disclosed. The system includes a data acquisition component, a power analytics server and a client terminal. The data acquisition component acquires real-time data output from the electrical system. The power analytics server is comprised of a real-time electrical system security index engine that calculates real-time system security index values from stability indices data generated from a virtual system model of the electrical system. The client terminal displays the system security index values to assess the security and stability of the electrical system.

Claims (76)

1. A system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, the system comprising:

a data acquisition component communicatively connected to a sensor configured to acquire real-time data output from the electrical system, wherein the electrical system comprises static components and rotating equipment, and the static components include transformers, cables, overhead lines, and reactors;

a power analytics server communicatively connected to the data acquisition component, comprising

a virtual system modeling engine configured to generate predicted data output for the electrical system utilizing a virtual system model of the electrical system,

an analytics engine configured to monitor the real-time data output and the predicted data output of the electrical system, the analytics engine further configured to initiate a calibration and synchronization operation to update the virtual system model when a difference between the real-time data output and the predicted data output exceeds a threshold, and

a real-time electrical system security index engine configured to calculate real-time system security index values based upon stability indices data generated from the virtual system model; and

a client terminal communicatively connected to the power analytics server and configured to display the system security index.

2. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the stability indices data is a product of an angular stability index, a frequency stability index, and a voltage stability index.

3. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the angular stability index is determined from sub-index data received from a plurality of sub-systems of the electrical system.

4. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 3 , wherein the angular stability index is determined by a lowest value of the sub-index data.

5. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the frequency stability index is determined from a maximum time duration for which a frequency excursion of the electrical system voltage violates a predetermined frequency threshold.

6. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 5 , wherein the frequency excursion includes one of a frequency rise and a frequency drop of the electrical system voltage.

7. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the voltage stability index is determined as a maximum time duration for which a voltage excursion violates a predetermined voltage threshold.

8. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 7 , wherein the voltage excursion includes one of a voltage rise and a voltage drop of the electrical system voltage.

9. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the virtual system model of the electrical system is stored in virtual system model database communicatively interfaced with the power analytics server.

10. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 9 , wherein the system security index value of the system security index is within a range of 0 to 100.

11. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 10 , wherein the system security index value of 100 means the electrical system is fully secure and stable.

12. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 10 , wherein the system security index value of 0 means the electrical system is insecure and unstable.

13. A system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, the system comprising:

a data acquisition component communicatively connected to a sensor configured to acquire real-time data output from the electrical system, wherein the electrical system comprises static components and rotating equipment, and the rotating equipment includes synchronous machines, induction machines, generators, motor operated valves, voltage regulators, governors, turbines, relays, static var compensators, fault isolation units, and static automatic bus transfer systems;

a power analytics server communicatively connected to the data acquisition component, comprising

a virtual system modeling engine configured to generate predicted data output for the electrical system utilizing a virtual system model of the electrical system,

an analytics engine configured to monitor the real-time data output and the predicted data output of the electrical system, the analytics engine further configured to initiate a calibration and synchronization operation to update the virtual system model when a difference between the real-time data output and the predicted data output exceeds a threshold, and

a real-time electrical system security index engine configured to calculate real-time system security index values based upon stability indices data generated from the virtual system model; and

a client terminal communicatively connected to the power analytics server and configured to display the system security index.

14. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the stability indices data is generated once a disturbance event within the electrical system has occurred.

15. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 14 , wherein the disturbance event includes application removal of one of a three-phase fault, a phase-to-ground fault, a phase-phase-ground fault, and a phase-phase fault.

16. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 14 , wherein the disturbance event includes one of branch addition and branch tripping.

17. A system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, the system comprising:

a data acquisition component communicatively connected to a sensor configured to acquire real-time data output from the electrical system;

a power analytics server communicatively connected to the data acquisition component, comprising

a virtual system modeling engine configured to generate predicted data output for the electrical system utilizing a virtual system model of the electrical system,

an analytics engine configured to monitor the real-time data output and the predicted data output of the electrical system, the analytics engine further configured to initiate a calibration and synchronization operation to update the virtual system model when a difference between the real-time data output and the predicted data output exceeds a threshold, and

a real-time electrical system security index engine configured to calculate real-time system security index values based upon stability indices data generated from the virtual system model, wherein the stability indices data is a product of an angular stability index, a frequency stability index, and a voltage stability index, and is generated once a disturbance event within the electrical system has occurred, wherein the disturbance event includes one of induction motor starting and induction motor stopping; and

a client terminal communicatively connected to the power analytics server and configured to display the system security index.

18. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 17 , wherein the electrical system comprises static components and rotating equipment.

19. A system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, the system comprising:

a data acquisition component communicatively connected to a sensor configured to acquire real-time data output from the electrical system;

a power analytics server communicatively connected to the data acquisition component, comprising

a virtual system modeling engine configured to generate predicted data output for the electrical system utilizing a virtual system model of the electrical system,

an analytics engine configured to monitor the real-time data output and the predicted data output of the electrical system, the analytics engine further configured to initiate a calibration and synchronization operation to update the virtual system model when a difference between the real-time data output and the predicted data output exceeds a threshold, and

a real-time electrical system security index engine configured to calculate real-time system security index values based upon stability indices data generated from the virtual system model, wherein the stability indices data is a product of an angular stability index, a frequency stability index, and a voltage stability index, and is generated once a disturbance event within the electrical system has occurred, wherein the disturbance event includes one of shunt tripping and shunt addition; and

a client terminal communicatively connected to the power analytics server and configured to display the system security index.

20. A system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, the system comprising:

a data acquisition component communicatively connected to a sensor configured to acquire real-time data output from the electrical system;

a power analytics server communicatively connected to the data acquisition component, comprising

a virtual system modeling engine configured to generate predicted data output for the electrical system utilizing a virtual system model of the electrical system,

an analytics engine configured to monitor the real-time data output and the predicted data output of the electrical system, the analytics engine further configured to initiate a calibration and synchronization operation to update the virtual system model when a difference between the real-time data output and the predicted data output exceeds a threshold, and

a real-time electrical system security index engine configured to calculate real-time system security index values based upon stability indices data generated from the virtual system model, wherein the stability indices data is a product of an angular stability index, a frequency stability index, and a voltage stability index, and is generated once a disturbance event within the electrical system has occurred, wherein the disturbance event includes one of generator tripping and static var compensator tripping; and

a client terminal communicatively connected to the power analytics server and configured to display the system security index.

21. The system for intelligent monitoring and management of an electrical system, as recited in claim 14 , wherein the disturbance event includes one of impact loading and load shedding.

22. A computer implemented method for monitoring and managing an electrical system, the method comprising:

acquiring real-time data output from components of the electrical system using a data acquisition component communicatively connected to a sensor of the electrical system;

updating a virtual system model of the electrical system using the real-time data output acquired;

calculating real-time system security index values for the electrical system based upon stability indices data generated from the updated virtual system model after detection of a disturbance event within the electrical system, wherein the disturbance event includes one of induction motor starting and induction motor stopping; and

displaying the system security index values using a client terminal communicatively connected to the power analytics server.

The computer implemented method for monitoring and managing an electrical system, as recited in claim 22 , wherein the system security index values are a product of the stability indices data input from at least one of an angular stability index, a frequency stability index, and a voltage stability index.

24. The computer implemented method for monitoring and managing an electrical system, as recited in claim 23 , wherein the system security index values of the system security index are within a range of 0 to 100.

25. The computer implemented method for monitoring and managing an electrical system, as recited in claim 24 , wherein the system security index value of 100 means the electrical system is fully secure and stable.

26. The computer implemented method for monitoring and managing an electrical system, as recited in claim 24 , wherein the system security index value of 0 means the electrical system is insecure and unstable.

27. The computer implemented method for monitoring and managing an electrical system, as recited in claim 23 , wherein the angular stability index is determined from sub-index data received from a plurality of sub-systems of the electrical system.

28. The computer implemented method for monitoring and managing an electrical system, as recited in claim 27 , wherein the angular stability index is determined by a lowest value of the sub-index data.

29. The computer implemented method for monitoring and managing an electrical system, as recited in claim 23 , wherein the frequency stability index is determined from a maximum time duration for which a frequency excursion of the electrical system voltage violates a predetermined frequency threshold.

30. The computer implemented method for monitoring and managing an electrical system, as recited in claim 29 , wherein the frequency excursion includes one of a frequency rise and a frequency drop of the electrical system voltage.

31. The computer implemented method for monitoring and managing an electrical system, as recited in claim 23 , wherein the voltage stability index is determined as a maximum time duration for which a voltage excursion violates a predetermined voltage threshold.

32. The computer implemented method for monitoring and managing an electrical system, as recited in claim 31 , wherein the voltage excursion includes one of a voltage rise and a voltage drop of the electrical system voltage.

33. A computer implemented method for monitoring and managing an electrical system, the method comprising:

acquiring real-time data output from components of the electrical system using a data acquisition component communicatively connected to a sensor of the electrical system;

updating a virtual system model of the electrical system using the real-time data output acquired;

calculating real-time system security index values for the electrical system based upon stability indices data generated from the updated virtual system model after detection of a disturbance event within the electrical system, wherein the disturbance event includes one of shunt tripping and shunt addition; and

displaying the system security index values using a client terminal communicatively connected to the power analytics server.

34. A computer implemented method for monitoring and managing an electrical system, the method comprising:

acquiring real-time data output from components of the electrical system using a data acquisition component communicatively connected to a sensor of the electrical system;

updating a virtual system model of the electrical system using the real-time data output acquired;

calculating real-time system security index values for the electrical system based upon stability indices data generated from the updated virtual system model after detection of a disturbance event within the electrical system, wherein the disturbance event includes one of generator tripping and static var compensator tripping; and

displaying the system security index values using a client terminal communicatively connected to the power analytics server.
