Handle assembly
View Patent ↗An apparatus for providing convenient grasping of a router adjacent base/motor housing includes a base for supporting a motor housing for driving a working tool. A generally L-shaped handle including a connecting member and grasping member is connected to the base for permitting a user to comfortably manipulate the power tool adjacent the motor housing. In further aspect, a removable a generally L-shaped handle includes a channel extending through the handle for directing dust and debris away from the working tool.
1. A removable base for a router comprising:
a base sleeve including a generally cylindrical aperture configured to receive a motor housing that contains a motor configured to drive a working tool, and a clamp configured to removably clamp the base about the motor housing;
a support member connected to the base sleeve for supporting the motor housing on a surface; and
a generally L-shaped handle, having a connecting member coupled to the base and a grasping member, said handle for manipulating the router on the surface,
wherein the handle defines a channel therethrough with a terminal portion adapted to be attached to a vacuum source that is external to the router.
2. The base of claim 1 , wherein the generally L-shaped handle is connected to the base sleeve adjacent the interface of the base sleeve and the support member.
3. The base of claim 1 , further comprising a universal grip coupled to the grasping member, said universal grip being configured to be grasped by various sized human hands.

The base of claim 1 , further comprising a grip coupled to the generally L-shaped handle, said grip being coupled to the L-shaped handle by at least one of: coating the grip on at least a portion of the generally L-shaped handle, frictionally securing the grip to the generally L-shaped handle, and securing the grip via a fastener to the generally L-shaped handle.
5. The base of claim 1 , wherein the grasping member is substantially parallel to an axis of the generally cylindrical base sleeve.
6. The base of claim 1 , wherein the generally L-shaped handle is removable.
7. The base of claim 1 , wherein the grasping member is adjustably positionable.
8. The base of claim 1 , wherein the base defines a seam and the clamp is configured to clamp the base across the seam.
9. A removable base for a router comprising:
a base sleeve including a generally cylindrical aperture configured to receive a motor housing that contains a motor configured to drive a working tool, and a clamp configured to removably clamp the base about the motor housing;
a support member connected to the base sleeve for supporting the motor housing on a surface;
a generally L-shaped handle, having a connecting member coupled to the base sleeve and a grasping member, said handle for manipulating the power tool on a workpiece; and
a grip coupled to the gasping member and having a plurality of protrusions directed inwardly toward the base sleeve.

The base of claim 9 wherein the grip is coupled to the grasping member [L-shaped handle] by at least one of: coating the grip on at least a portion of the grasping member [generally L-shaped handle], frictionally securing the grip to the grasping member [generally L-shaped handle], and [or] securing the grip via a fastener to the grasping member [generally L-shaped handle].
11. The base of claim 9 , wherein the generally L-shaped handle is removable.
12. The base of claim 9 , wherein the grasping member includes a terminal zone for coupling a vacuum hose thereto.
13. The base of claim 9 , wherein the generally L-shaped handle defines a channel formed therethrough.
14. The base of claim 9 , wherein the grasping member is adjustably positionable.
15. The base of claim 9 , wherein the grasping member is angled between approximately 0° (zero degrees) and approximately 20° (twenty degrees) from an axis approximately normal to the connecting member.
16. The base of claim 9 , wherein the base sleeve defines a seam and the member is configured to clamp the base across the seam.
