Abstract

A bone anchoring device, includes a receiving part for receiving a rod-shaped implant element, the receiving part having a first bore coaxial with a longitudinal axis and extending from a first end of the receiving part, and a recess extending from the first end to accomplish insertion of the rod-shaped implant element. The device further includes a bone screw having a threaded section for insertion into the bone and being fixed at or positionable at a second end of the receiving part and a fixation element provided to the first bore to fixate a rigid section of the rod-shaped implant element. The rigid section of the rod-shaped implant element has a first width, and the recess of the receiving part has a second width. The second width is larger than the first width, such that the recess may accommodate a stepped portion of the rod-shaped implant element that has an increased thickness.

Claims (41)

1. A bone anchoring device, comprising:

a bone anchoring element;

a rod-shaped implant having a first portion with a first diameter and a stepped portion having a second diameter that is greater than the first diameter; and

a receiving assembly connected to the bone anchoring element, the receiving assembly comprising:

a receiving part comprising an outer surface and a recess configured for insertion of the rod-shaped implant; and

a stop face located inside of a perimeter defined by the outer surface of the receiving part;

wherein the stop face is configured to abut against the stepped portion of the rod-shaped implant when the rod-shaped implant is received in the recess of the receiving part; and

wherein when the stop face abuts against the stepped portion of the rod-shaped implant, the first portion of the rod-shaped implant extends past the stop face.

2. The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the bone anchoring element is fixedly attached to the receiving part.

3. The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the bone anchoring element is pivotally connected to the receiving part.

4. The bone anchoring device of claim 3 , further comprising a. pressure element configured to be inserted in the receiving part, wherein the stop face is on the pressure element.

5. A bone anchoring device, comprising:

a receiving part for receiving a rod-shaped implant, the receiving part having a first end, a second end, a first bore extending coaxially with a longitudinal axis of the receiving part from the first end, a second bore at the second end, and a recess extending from the first end and from a first side of the receiving part to a second side of the receiving part to define two legs, the recess configured for insertion of a rod-shaped implant;

a bone screw having a threaded section for insertion into a bone and a head section positionable within the second bore;

a fixation element configured to fix a rod-shaped implant in the recess; and

a pressure element configured to be arranged between the head section of the bone screw and the fixation element for transmitting pressure to the head section, and having a cylindrical recess defining two legs and being adapted to receive a rod-shaped implant;

wherein the two legs of the pressure element are separated by a first width and the two legs of the receiving part are separated by a second width greater than the first width at the first side or the second side; and

wherein the pressure element comprises a stop face providing a transition between the recess of the pressure element and the recess of the receiving part, the stop face configured to abut against a stepped portion of an inserted rod-shaped implant.

6. The bone anchoring device according to claim 5 , wherein the stop face is oriented substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the cylindrical recess.

7. The bone anchoring device according to claim 5 , wherein:

the pressure element comprises a surface having a substantially cylindrical shape adapted to fit with an inner wall of the first bore of the receiving part, and

the stop face is formed as a plane recessed from the cylindrical surface of the pressure element,

8. The bone anchoring device according to claim 5 , wherein the stop face is represented by a planar surface and has a shape of an annular segment.

9. The bone anchoring device according to claim 5 , wherein the recess of the receiving part has a shape of an inverted keyhole, including a bottom section having the second width and an upper section oriented towards the first end of the receiving part having the first width,

10. The bone anchoring device according to claim 5 , wherein the recess of the receiving part is substantially U-shaped including a substantially constant width from an upper section of the recess towards a bottom section of the recess.

11. The bone anchoring device according to claim 5 , wherein the recess of the receiving part has at least a bottom section having the second width at the first side, and wherein the recess is substantially U-shaped and has the first width at the second side.

12. The bone anchoring device according to claim 5 , wherein the recess of the receiving part has at least a bottom section having the second width at each of the first and second sides.

13. The bone anchoring device according to claim 5 , wherein the recess of the receiving part has an edge that is chamfered at least in a bottom section thereof.

14. A bone stabilization device, comprising:

a rod-shaped implant comprising a rigid section having a first diameter and a stepped portion having a thickness that is greater than the first diameter;

a receiving part for receiving the rod-shaped implant, the receiving part having a first end, a second end, a first bore extending coaxially with a longitudinal axis of the receiving part from the first end, a second bore at the second end, and a recess extending from the first end and configured for insertion of the rod-shaped implant;

a bone screw having a threaded section for insertion into a bone and a head section positionable within the second bore;

a fixation element configured to fix the rigid section of the rod-shaped implant in the recess;

a pressure element configured to be arranged between the head section of the bone screw and the fixation element for transmitting pressure to the head section, and having a cylindrical recess adapted to receive the rigid section of the rod-shaped implant;

wherein the cylindrical recess of the pressure element has the first diameter and the recess of the receiving part has a width greater than the first diameter; and

wherein the pressure element comprises a stop face that abuts against the stepped portion of the rod-shaped implant when the rod-shaped implant is received in the recess of the receiving part.

15. The bone stabilization device according to claim 14 , wherein the stepped portion of the rod-shaped implant has an end face configured to abut against the stop face of the pressure element.

A method of attaching a bone anchoring device to a bone, the bone anchoring device comprising a bone anchoring element, a rod-shaped implant having a first portion with a first diameter and a stepped portion having a second diameter that is greater than the first diameter, a receiving assembly connected to the bone anchoring element, the receiving assembly comprising a receiving part comprising an outer surface and a recess configured for insertion of the rod-shaped implant, and a stop face located inside of a perimeter defined by the outer surface of the receiving part, wherein the stop face is configured to abut against the stepped portion of the rod-shaped implant when the rod-shaped implant is received in the recess of the receiving part, the method comprising:

attaching the bone anchoring element to a bone; and

inserting the rod-shaped implant in the recess of the receiving part;

wherein when the stop face abuts against the stepped portion of the rod-shaped implant, the first portion of the rod-shaped implant extends past the stop face.
