Abstract

An apparatus for providing a signal related to a position of a part comprises an exciter coil, and a receiver coil disposed proximate to the exciter coil. The exciter coil generates magnetic flux when the exciter coil is energized by a source of electrical energy, such as an alternating current source. The receiver coil generates a receiver signal when the exciter coil is energized, due to an inductive coupling between the receiver coil and the exciter coil. The receiver coil has a plurality of sections, the inductive coupling tending to induce opposed voltages in at least two of the sections. Embodiments of the present invention include linear sensors, rotational sensors, and novel configurations for improved ratiometric sensing.

Claims (37)

1. An apparatus for providing a signal related to a position of a part, the apparatus including:

an exciter coil, the exciter coil generating magnetic flux when the exciter coil is energized by a source of electrical energy;

a receiver coil, disposed proximate to the exciter coil, the receiver coil generating a receiver signal when the exciter coil is energized due to an inductive coupling between the receiver coil and the exciter coil,

the receiver coil having a plurality of sections, the inductive coupling tending to induce opposed voltages in at least two of the sections,

the inductive coupling being modified by movement of the part so that the receiver signal is related to the position of the part; and

a reference coil, the reference coil providing a reference signal when the exciter coil is energized due to inductive coupling between the reference coil and the exciter coil,

the reference signal being substantially independent of the position of the part.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a coupler element mechanically coupled to the part,

the coupler element modifying the inductive coupling between the exciter coil and the receiver coil so that the receiver signal is related to the part position.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the coupler element comprises a metal plate.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the coupler element comprises a generally U-shaped structure of an electrically conducting material, a coil assembly including the exciter coil and receiver coil being at least in part being located within an interior portion of the U-shaped structure.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the receiver coil is generally elongated, having a first end and a second end,

a first section of the receiver coil having a major area proximate to first end,

a second section of the receiver coil having a major area closer to the second end than the first section.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the apparatus is a linear position sensor, the apparatus providing a signal related to the position of the part along a linear path,

the receiver coil being generally elongated along the linear path.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the receiver coil has a generally rectangular perimeter.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the receiver coil includes two generally triangular sections.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is a rotational sensor,

the receiver coil and exciter coil being disposed on a generally cylindrical substrate.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising a coupler element moving along, a generally circular path concentric to the generally cylindrical substrate.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , the apparatus being a rotational sensor for a shaft extending through the generally cylindrical surface.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , the part being a pedal.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , the apparatus being an electronic throttle control.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , the exciter coil, the receiver coil, and the reference coil being formed as a coil assembly on a printed circuit board.

15. The apparatus of claim 1 , further including an electronic circuit receiving the reference signal and the receiver signal, the electronic circuit providing the signal correlated with the part position.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the signal correlated with the part position is a ratiometric signal formed using the receiver signal and the reference signal.

17. An apparatus for providing a signal related to a position of a part, the apparatus including:

an exciter coil, the exciter coil generating magnetic flux when the exciter coil is energized by a source of electrical energy;

a receiver coil, disposed proximate to the exciter coil, the receiver coil generating a receiver signal when the exciter coil is energized due to an inductive coupling between the receiver coil and the exciter coil,

the receiver coil having a plurality of sections, the inductive coupling tending to induce opposed voltages in at least two of the sections;

a coupler element mechanically coupled to the part, the coupler element modifying the inductive coupling between the exciter coil and the receiver coil so that the receiver signal is related to the part position;

a reference coil, the reference coil providing a reference signal when the exciter coil is energized due to inductive coupling between the reference coil and the exciter coil,

the reference signal being substantially independent of the position of the part; and

an electronic circuit receiving the reference signal and the receiver signal, the electronic circuit providing the signal correlated with the position of the part.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the part is a pedal, the apparatus being a pedal position sensor.

19. The apparatus of claim 17 , the apparatus being an electronic throttle control.
